Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Badgers? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across The Badgers and the remainder of Buckinghamshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Call us and our technicians can show you what happens next before you try any more.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And having started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
- Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank then into precisely those components.
- Don't put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Badgers Way, anywhere — an awkward place for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never moved.
- Get your location prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning MK18 7 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has run. These three answers settle the full visit.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting outside Wolverton since this morning? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the drive in that pulled thinned diesel through your pump. Ring us before you move the car.
If you've put petrol in your diesel Mercedes C-Class around The Badgers and you are now stuck at Lidl with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us. Do not fire it up once more to exit the spot. We will come to you, drain that tank, rinse your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little of it, so these tend to be the simple jobs.
Three answers determine much of the work: what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we get to the car in the car park by New Inn. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Vauxhall Astra has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and the system primed, we start the car and check it runs properly before you pull away.
Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the precision parts that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Audi A6 drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how that trip to Bourton Park went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off and call us.
Three things help when you phone from near Otter 3: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot we work, and so the spot itself is seldom the issue — we'd far rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the BMW X1, change the fuel filter where there is a usable one, flush the lines and put fresh fuel through the entire circuit, since by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines rather than in your tank.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
Pumps are where this work mostly starts, and where a big share of that ends. The drain typically happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere our engineers work, and often.
Nowhere else other than the forecourt can it be spotted with the engine still cold. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.
Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the help. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.
Service in The Badgers
As a residential suburb, The Badgers gets a steady visit, and the areas close by come with it on that same run: Linden Village and Stratford Fields, Buckingham and Page Hill, Mount Pleasant.
Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most places across Buckinghamshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Contact us to enquire rather than assuming — county lines especially, and anywhere the satnav may struggle with.
Use this map for the area included here. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground we serve, and none of it asks your vehicle to move to us.
Broken down by the roadside near The Badgers
The chance to pull over anywhere safe doesn't come to everybody. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Partridge Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a routine call for us and not an odd one.
Fine where you are? Sit beside it. Not okay? Move out and away from it. Do not start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mix further into the fuel system. A technician coming to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the car than carrying on.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
This is where your M40 matters, under 15 miles out of The Badgers. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.
Pull off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never start the car to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring changes.

Our job in The Badgers, step by step
- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
- Your tank gets emptied of it.
- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the problem, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
- Our technicians start the car and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you're ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.
A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Badgers
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this problem under it's a different one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.
AdBlue removal in The Badgers has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around The Badgers
Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what varies it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much that tank holds.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
The Badgers drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
I'm on a forecourt in The Badgers. Can you drain the car on the spot?
Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. Our engineers attend Tesco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more regularly than people expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and the car, still together?
Leave the engine switched off.
Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
