Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Edge

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in The Edge or the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers can tell you what your next move will be. Call us — that comes before all else.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. That is why you never crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it greases — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Vicarage Street, anywhere — an awkward location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
  • A van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts OL8 4, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you dial.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has started — these three details decide the full visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The drive back would more or less double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Passat. So leave it where it is. Phone us from the platform if that's handier — nobody needs you standing over your car at Moston while our engineers get it done, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Asda now. Time elapsed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. The Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from St Margaret's CofE Junior Infant and Nursery School — they all do, and that's the trap. Diesel into a petrol vehicle mostly will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

The pump isn't turning, and so whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Incline Park, none of that is happening now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the car home to buy any.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical not sloppy — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi A3, a fill-up near Chapel Road Synthetic Pitch that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at your injectors.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in The Edge

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Most of the job starts at a pump, so a large part of that ends up done there. If you are still on the forecourt at Gulf, that is typically where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with your motor never run, and no place else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will normally happily wheel the vehicle out from the pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Moving the car four lengths does not justify firing the engine.

Areas our vans reach around The Edge

Hollins, Hollinwood, Moss Grove, Butler Green, Copster Hill — every one of them on our trips that take us over to The Edge itself, a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. The places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around Greater Manchester, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the thing to skip, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav gets lost. Contact us and ask.

Use our map for the ground shown on this page. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. We work over every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the kerbside anywhere around The Edge?

Not everybody gets a decent spot to stop. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge on Devon Way, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Safe there? Wait with it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. A van heading to an inconvenient place is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has rolled

This is where the local A62 counts, under a mile from The Edge. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction and turn off. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

The Edge itself

The Edge is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. The Edge sits at an elevation of 127 metres, approximately 5.4 miles from Manchester city centre. The Edge is close to nearby places such as Hollins, Hollinwood, and Moss Grove, and is part of the larger Manchester urban area. The Edge has a population of around 8970 people, living in a variety of housing types, with terraced housing being predominant.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you in The Edge

  • We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • Out goes the contaminated mixture.
  • Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what's left in your system isn't what caused the problem.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • When it is turned on, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Edge is a separate job

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in The Edge has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around The Edge?

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much the tank holds.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in The Edge

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in The Edge?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the car off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your car still with you?

The engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
