The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Grove
Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even for a moment, to shift it. Pause; leave the vehicle off. The next few minutes settle it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run normally comes down to draining and cleaning, right there. Here is the sequence of things from here, wherever you're in The Grove.
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off
In this order, and before anything else:
- Bleeding the fuel system draws petrol from the tank towards the components it damages, and switching your ignition on can be enough to do that. So the keys come out, and your ignition remains off completely.
- A fuller tank of the same mix is all topping up gives you, because it removes nothing. So no more diesel.
- Hazard lights on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.
- The staff will normally help you push it away from the petrol pump. Let them, and move it by hand — not on your engine, even for a few yards.
- Which fuel, and about how much? The receipt answers both, and that is where our first question starts. Do not throw it away.
If you were still driving when you noticed, pull over somewhere sensible rather than pushing on for the services — on the M54, under 10 miles from The Grove, that means the next junction. Step one comes next.
The Grove fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?
From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.
Not run, not even briefly:
- The petrol sits inside the tank, and just there.
- Normally it is drained and flushed right where the car stands.
- Step one counts for precisely this reason: it is the best spot to be in.
If the engine has been run, even for a moment:
- Your lines and the filter already carry petrol drawn from your tank.
- The high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors get it on a bigger run.
- Lines flushed, the fuel filter dealt with, and sometimes more: this job expands as the miles does.
That line falls there since diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not. In your tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that move the vehicle.
Before you call about petrol in a diesel in The Grove: what we need
A little planning is the difference between a van that finds you and a van that circles.
- The ideal start is a postcode — one starting WV15 5 — for where you have stopped.
- Give the street — Hermitage Close or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Co-op Food, for example — and it's much easier to find.
- That it's a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.
- Tell us which got in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for The Grove.
- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
- Has it run? If so, say how far it went, and how it was driven.
- Sort who owns the vehicle before our technicians arrive: some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is quicker first.
Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.
Waiting for a fuel drain in The Grove: what to do
Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm whilst you wait. So stick to these.
- Stay with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to move the car a short way.
- Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts that petrol.
- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank stays where it is all the same.
- Not for the radio, not for your windows: the ignition stays off.
Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time
- First, three questions: which fuel was put in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers set this job, so the price follows them.
- Clearing it is how that blend gets taken from the tank.
- Petrol that has shifted beyond that tank travels in the lines if it ran, and the lines are purged to shift it.
- Cleared, or changed if the car has a serviceable one: your filter is dealt with next.
- Fresh diesel in, and the system primed.
- Starting up. When your system is bled with clean diesel, our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly.
Until it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. When it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very uncommon, and the vehicle returns to normal use right away.
After your fuel drain: back on the road in The Grove
- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do once it's been started on fresh fuel.
- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your cue to stop and call us again.
- The documents covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
