Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The High?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout The High and the rest of Essex. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Call us before anything else starts, so you'll know what comes next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Never crank it. Started anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It's not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we'd rather travel to an odd place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on College Gate, turn those hazards on then leave it there.
  • Before you ring, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning CM20 1 — that is what decides whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how much, and if the engine has run. Those three details decide the entire call-out.

Ring us before you move the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia this morning, and the vehicle outside Harlow Town ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and any damage came on the drive in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had diluted.

Hazards on. Motor off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine outside Hare Street Community Primary School and Nursery, you're late, and your receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in the Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, fuel gets supplied to demand, and a rushed dash needs plenty of it.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that drive to Northbrooks Park went, that tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the precision components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Ford Focus travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, switch off then ring us.

Three things help when you call from close to Chief: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, and so the place itself is rarely the trouble — we would far rather deal with a tight parking bay than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Dacia Duster, change the fuel filter where there's a usable one, flush the lines and put clean fuel through the full system, as by this point the worst of it is resting in the fuel lines rather than in your tank.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, an uneven idle, knocking: that is a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what's wrong. Don't restart the vehicle to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, by Risen Christ at Emmaus or anywhere else.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in The High

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this job begins at a pump, so a large share of it ends up completed on site. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's permission, that is a spot we work, and often.

Nowhere else other than a forecourt can this be stopped with your motor still unstarted. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Very much worth doing. Moving it four lengths does not justify firing the motor.

Can our technicians cover your side of The High?

The High is a residential suburb, so our technicians are out to the town and to the places around it on the same rounds: Harlow, Little Parndon, Hare Street, Netteswell and Passmores.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of locations across Essex have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Guessing is the mistake to avoid, above all on a border or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Ring us to ask.

Use this map for the patch included on this page. Your car does not need to move to us. We operate over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the roadside around The High

The chance to pull over somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge beside Playhouse Square, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you remain by the vehicle or move clear of it hangs on if sitting there feels wise. Don't start it up to get to a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. We will bring the van to a difficult place without any bother, and for your car that's much better than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the local M11 comes in — under 3 miles from The High. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the next safe exit then switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring changes.

A little about The High

The High is a suburban area located on the riverside in Essex, with an elevation of 72 metres. The High sits near the cities of Chelmsford and Harlow, and is also close to the communities of Little Parndon and Hare Street. The High is characterized by its predominant housing type, which is flat, and is situated approximately 20 miles from London. The High has a population of around 6424 residents.

Once our technicians get to you around The High: what we do

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away comes the polluted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the problem, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been spotted quickly, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The High

Don't crank it: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around The High has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around The High?

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much the tank takes.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around The High

Fuel drains on a The High petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work gets done. Regularly, provided the site consents: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more often than people assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect.
