Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Holdings: What Happens Now

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: your engine remains off. Pause there. Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and no other factor decides that as much as these next few minutes do. Wherever you happen to be around The Holdings, here is how things go from now.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

First, these — following this order.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank towards the parts it damages.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same mixture.
  • Being seen comes before the rest beside moving traffic: put your hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.
  • Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push the car away from the petrol pump. Do not start the vehicle to shift it, however short the distance.
  • The first question we will ask is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the till receipt says both. Keep it.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M27 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 10 miles from The Holdings, and stop somewhere safe and not pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

Each The Holdings fuel drain starts here: has the motor run?

One answer is what everything after this stage depends on.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • The petrol sits in your tank, and just there.
  • Usually it is emptied and flushed just where the vehicle is.
  • Step one matters for exactly this reason: it is the best position to be in.

Run at all, even for a second:

  • The fuel lines and your filter already hold petrol drawn out of that tank.
  • Run it farther and that petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through your pump first.
  • Miles is what turns it into a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does. A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing. Move the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from The Holdings

Whether the van circles or finds you comes down to a little preparation.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode starting BH24 3 is the best place to start.
  • A road name helps: Crow Lane, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one at Lidl, for example — and it's much easier to find.
  • Say what the vehicle is — make, model — and check it is diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own The Holdings page.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and the way it was driven.
  • Whose motor it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that's easier settled before our technicians get there than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

Waiting for a fuel drain around The Holdings: what to do

Hold to these: kindly meant help causes the damage during the wait.

  • Stay with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.
  • Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes the petrol.
  • No DIY draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond that tank.
  • Not for the radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.

When our van gets there: the fuel drain, step by step

  • Fuel, volume, whether it has run: those answers decide the job, and that's why you get a price after them instead of before.
  • Out of the tank comes the tainted mix: the tank is cleared.
  • The fuel lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond that tank, and your lines are carrying it.
  • Then the fuel filter: changed where there is a serviceable one, cleared where there is not.
  • Clean diesel in, and your system primed.
  • Starting the car. Once your system is primed with fresh diesel, we start the engine and make sure it runs correctly.

Only once it is running on new diesel do our technicians head off. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught early, so the vehicle can go right back to normal driving.

After the fuel drain: back on the road in The Holdings

  • Once it has been started on clean fuel, there's nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop and ring us once more.
  • Hold on to the documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
