The Hyde: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout The Hyde and the remainder of Greater London, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Contact us so our technicians will show you what follows after that before you do anything else.
What to try next about petrol in a diesel
- Do not start the car — and do not believe it when it starts. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel generally just can't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a few miles. It is not okay. It's wearing the fuel system as you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off too: switching it on is usually enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
- Never put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it only gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never moved is the quickest one to sort, and our team would sooner get to an odd place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Rookery Way, put your hazards on and keep the car there.
- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting NW9 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.
- Three answers decide your whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough measure involved, plus if it has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Quarter past eight, a rushed fill-up on the road in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked outside Hendon for three hours. Ring us and leave the car exactly where it sits. The run in is the thing that is key now, since diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were done with your pump working on a fluid that had given up much of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you went, not how long the vehicle has been parked.
Twenty to nine outside Colindale Primary School, running late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone us. Three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — while a hurried morning dash needs plenty.
Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the vehicle sits, since a diesel Ford Focus parked at Rushgrove Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.
Your pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a wearing one sheds passes onward with your fuel — which is why we are blunt about not driving on. Ring us, then leave the diesel Dacia Duster where it is by St Matthias Colindale.
The smaller petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. Strange locations see most of it for that reason. So: topped up by The Hyde United Reformed Church without thinking, in a diesel Audi A3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage settles how much petrol gets to the injectors.
Can petrol be taken from your diesel on a forecourt?
A good portion of the job ends up done at a pump, since that's where it usually kicks off. If you're still on the forecourt at Texaco, that's generally where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.
No place other than the forecourt can it be caught with the engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key.
Staff will generally chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the offer. Cranking it just for four car lengths? Not a chance.
Coverage near The Hyde
As a residential suburb, The Hyde gets a routine visit, while the areas round about go along on the same round: Colindale and West Hendon, Hendon and Kingsbury, The Burroughs.
Our technicians still come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Greater London, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Guessing is the thing to skip, especially on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles. Contact us to ask.
The area the page spans sits on our map. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.
Kerbside call-outs across The Hyde
Some people get no suitable place to pull in whatsoever. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Rookery Close as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.
Remain with the motor if it's sensible to sit inside, and out of it if it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However difficult the spot, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for your car than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
under a mile out of The Hyde, the M1 is what matters here. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are typically a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.
Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible junction and turn off. It alters what we bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.
The Hyde itself
The Hyde is a suburban area in northwest London, situated near the River Brent and close to the neighbouring areas of Colindale, West Hendon, and Hendon. The Hyde sits at an elevation of around 45 metres, approximately 7.4 miles from central London. The Hyde has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent in the area. The Hyde is located near Westminster, which is about 7.8 miles away.
The job around The Hyde, step by step
- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies change what the work really is.
- That tank is drained completely.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
- Once it is started, our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
Then it's ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual.
A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Hyde
The problem isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own The Hyde page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around The Hyde?
We can't put one number on this page truthfully, since this job is not one job. What moves it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.
Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around The Hyde
At a petrol station around The Hyde, can you do a fuel drain there?
Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we attend Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?
There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and clean the car wherever it is.
Is your car still with you?
The engine stays off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car remain that way. A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers expect.
