Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Leys: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the car off. Cleared and cleaned, just where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes to come more than on anything else. Anywhere you are in The Leys, here is how things run from here.

Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

Go through the following in sequence, first.

  • Bleeding your fuel system pulls petrol from your tank towards the components it harms, and switching your ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys get taken out, and the ignition stays off altogether.
  • Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Being seen comes before the rest near moving traffic: switch the hazards on, and only then deal with everything else.
  • By hand, not on the motor: that is how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, whatever the miles.
  • The first question we will ask is which fuel went in and about how much — and your receipt says both. Hold on to it.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M42 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 5 miles from The Leys, and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

The Leys fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

What comes after this rests on one answer, and only one.

If your engine has not run at all:

  • All the petrol sits inside your tank, and just there.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is normally the whole job.
  • This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of step one.

If it's been started, even for a moment:

  • The lines and the fuel filter already hold petrol pulled from that tank.
  • On a bigger run it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.
  • The further it went, the larger this job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and now and then more besides.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors lubricated as it runs through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there. In the tank, left alone, petrol harms nothing. Once it is pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from The Leys: what to have ready

A van that circles against a technician that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode starting B79 7 is the ideal place to start.
  • Name the road — Moorgate or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
  • Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: say the one at Co-op Food, and it's easy.
  • Tell us what the car is — make, model — and check it's diesel.
  • What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for The Leys, and so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever gives us how much.
  • If it has run, how far and how heavily — as well as whether it has run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's go-ahead for the work, and sorting it before we arrive is faster than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

Waiting for a fuel drain in The Leys: what to do

During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — which is why these matter.

  • Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the vehicle.
  • A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone checking it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out a second time.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is risky — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not try a home-made drain.
  • Keep the ignition off — your windows and your radio included.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there

  • First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the quantity, and has it run? Those answers shape the job, so the price follows them.
  • Emptying it's how the blend gets taken out of your tank.
  • Petrol that has moved beyond the tank travels in the fuel lines if it ran, and your lines are purged to clear it.
  • Cleared, or replaced if the car has a workable one: your filter is dealt with next.
  • Clean diesel in, and the fuel system primed.
  • Our engineers start the engine only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed the system, then check that it's running properly.

The car has clean diesel running through it before our technicians go. If it has been caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual, and your car returns to normal use straight away.

Once your fuel drain is done: driving around The Leys again

  • Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do once it has been started on clean fuel.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and ring us back.
  • The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the documents.
  • Read the label on the pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
