Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Lunt?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in The Lunt or the remainder of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us before anything else happens, so you'll see what comes next.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the car — and do not depend on it when it fires up. That is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives off just fine for several miles. It's not all right. It's eating into the fuel system while you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Lunt Place? Hazards on, and keep the car there. A difficult location works for us better than a started motor.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts WV14 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus if your car has been turned over. Your responses decide everything that follows.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Volkswagen Passat sitting at Willenhall this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed diluted diesel through your pump was the run in. Phone before you go to fetch the car.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside Aldi now. Time passed isn't the thing we need. Fuel pulled by your pump is.

Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from Field View Primary School. They all do, and that's the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally will not run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — meanwhile your high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is supposed to be supplying. Nothing alerts you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Call us with about how far you drove and how hard you pushed it; the second answer counts more than the first.

A throttle gone limp, white smoke, an uneven idle, rattling: that is a misfuelled diesel Mercedes GLC telling you what's wrong. Do not restart it to find a better place — switch off where you have stopped, by Hovering Kestrel or anywhere else.

Cleared, not emptied — that's what a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso which got as far as Horse and Rider needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Most of this job begins at a forecourt, which means a fair portion of that is finished on site. We work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's permission, so if you're still at Texaco that is generally where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with the engine never run, and no place else manages it. Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

Roll it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Moving it four lengths doesn't warrant starting the engine.

Will our technicians serve your end of The Lunt?

The Lunt is a residential suburb, so our vans get out to it and to anywhere by it on the same rounds: St Chads, Bunkers Hill, Loxdale, Rough Hay and Portobello.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations in West Midlands, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. On the border, or somewhere your phone struggles with? Phone to check instead of presuming.

The map shows the area the page covers. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car never needs to move to us.

Stuck on the kerbside around The Lunt

Some drivers get no sensible spot to pull in at all. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge on Marbury Drive or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Whether you remain by your car or step clear of it rests on if being nearby feels wise. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll bring our van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is much better than pressing on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where the local M6 comes into it — under 3 miles away from The Lunt. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and do not restart it to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

A bit about The Lunt

The Lunt is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Wolverhampton, near the riverside and surrounded by other local neighbourhoods such as St Chads and Bunkers Hill. The Lunt sits at an elevation of 129 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. The Lunt is situated approximately 3.1 miles from Wolverhampton city centre and about 110 miles northwest of London. The Lunt has a population of around 7010 residents.

When we get to you around The Lunt: what follows

  • Our engineers check what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • We drain your tank of all the tainted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • Once it's turned on, our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and because everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Lunt is a separate problem

Do not fire it up: that first step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection your fuel system depends on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate The Lunt page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

The Lunt prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel queries from The Lunt drivers

At a petrol station around The Lunt, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate fault. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it remain that way. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
