Petrol in Diesel

What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Park

Not for a second, and not to move it: the engine remains off. Stop there. The next few minutes decide it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun generally comes down to emptying then rinsing, on the spot. From now on, in order, for anywhere around The Park:

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Do the following before anything else, in this sequence.

  • Take the keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of your tank to exactly the components it damages, and so keep the vehicle alone wholly.
  • Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the trouble. It doesn't: nothing comes out, and the tank simply carries more of the same.
  • Close to passing traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before everything else, so your car is easy to see.
  • However short the distance, starting it to move it is the thing to avoid. On a forecourt, push the vehicle away from the pump by hand instead, and ask the attendants to lend a hand.
  • Hold on to the receipt. It says which fuel went in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

If you were still on the move when you realised, pull over somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M1, under 10 miles from The Park, that means the next exit. Step one follows.

The Park fuel drain: has the motor run yet, or not?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

If your engine has not run at all:

  • Only the tank has petrol in it for now.
  • The job is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where the vehicle is.
  • No position is better, and it is why the first step counts so much.

Motor run, however for a moment?

  • Some petrol has left your tank already, gone through your filter, and got into your lines.
  • Run it further and that petrol reaches your injectors, having passed through your pump first.
  • The job grows with the mileage — lines flushed, filter seen to, occasionally more.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and your injectors lubricated as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just sitting in a tank. The components that shift it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in The Park, step by step

The Park, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A van that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little planning is the difference.

  • Your location: a postcode starting NG18 2 serves best.
  • A road name is a help: Ravensdale Road, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
  • Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Mega Sklep, and it's simple.
  • Tell us what the vehicle is — make, model — and check it is diesel.
  • Say which went in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for The Park.
  • How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.
  • The miles it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.
  • Settle who has the car ahead of when our engineers get there: some hire and company contracts want the owner to approve the work, and doing it quicker beforehand.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Email works as well if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

The Park fuel drain on its way? While you wait

The wait is where kindly meant help does the harm. Stick to these.

  • Where your car has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety before the car.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out once more.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is risky — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Do not drain it yourself.
  • The ignition remains off. Even for your radio or the windows.

Step by step: the fuel drain when our van gets there

  • Three queries. What went in, how much, and if it has run. Those answers decide the job, which is why our price comes after them but not before.
  • Your tank is drained. The tainted mix comes from the tank.
  • Petrol that has shifted beyond that tank travels in the fuel lines once it ran, and the fuel lines are cleaned to clear it.
  • Then the fuel filter: changed where there is a workable one, cleared where there's not.
  • Clean diesel in, and the system primed.
  • Starting up. When the fuel system is primed with new diesel, we start it and make sure it runs smoothly.

Till it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, so your car can go right back to normal driving.

Back on the road around The Park after the fuel drain

  • After it has been started on fresh fuel, there's nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over and ring us back.
  • The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep your paperwork.
  • Next time, trust the pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
