Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Prinnels?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over The Prinnels and the rest of Wiltshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. We can explain what the following stage is. Phone — it comes before everything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the car. Started anyway? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Flicking your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not moved is the quickest one to handle, and our team would rather drive to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Grandison Close, turn your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts SN5 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Three answers determine the whole call-out: the stuff you put in, the approximate volume involved, plus if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a big chunk of it finishes. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the station's consent, that is a spot our technicians work, and often.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with the motor never run, and nowhere else does that. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth it. Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in The Prinnels

Car parks like the one at Asda are a place we work in all the time, and your fuel is rarely the tricky part. That bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier on the way in that decides if our van can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If we can't work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series we'll move it without firing it — and that isn't pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the blend out of your tank and on to your pump, so a motor moved twice into a roomier spot has quietly become a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

Out there fine, back sluggish. If that was the run to Crow Brake, look at your tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine tolerances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile the diesel Dacia Duster covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel Mercedes E-Class up by Holy Trinity a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave the vehicle off. The short drive really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our engineers purge the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

Strange locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical instead of sloppy: the narrower petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up close to How the Mighty Fall without thinking, in a diesel Peugeot 208 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage is what settles how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Volkswagen Polo that made it close to St Mary's Church needs its circuit flushed. Draining is not the same thing.

Will we reach your end of The Prinnels?

The same journeys take us to Ramleaze, Middleleaze, Lydiard Tregoze, Eastleaze and Freshbrook as well as The Prinnels, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of locations in Wiltshire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing at all about if we come. Call us to enquire instead of presuming, above all when you are on the border or anywhere your phone can't find.

The map shows the ground this page includes. All of it is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped on the kerb anywhere in The Prinnels?

A chance to pull in anywhere sensible does not fall to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge of Tregoze Way, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Whether you wait by the car or keep clear of it turns on if being in it looks sensible. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for the car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M4 comes into it — under 3 miles away from The Prinnels. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to reposition. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what we bring.

A bit about The Prinnels

The Prinnels is a suburban area situated lakeside in Wiltshire, with a mix of housing types although predominantly detached homes. The Prinnels sits at an elevation of 104 metres, within a short drive of the nearby city of Bath. The Prinnels is located near other residential areas such as Ramleaze and Middleleaze, and is around 73.8 miles from London.

What we do when our technicians arrive with you in The Prinnels

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • The tainted fuel is drawn from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • When it's turned on, our technicians check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

The Prinnels AdBlue removal is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas the fault beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal in The Prinnels has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

The Prinnels costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the figure is listed below, since the job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around The Prinnels

At a petrol station around The Prinnels, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Shut off is how the car stays.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
