Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Quarry? Don't Start It

Don't turn on the engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over The Quarry and the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Phone so our team will tell you what happens from here before you do any more.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start it. And once started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: turning it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd sooner drive to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that hasn't moved. On the verge on Nantwich Road, that means hazards on then keep it.
  • The van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting ST7 8, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Three replies shape your whole visit: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark quantity involved, plus whether anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

The journey in is what pulled thinned diesel through the pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting outside Alsager all day, waits idle in that tank while it waits. Phone first — before your keys come out.

Our technicians will come to you, empty your tank, flush your fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into your diesel Renault Clio in The Quarry and you are stuck at Nisa Local with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and never start the car a second time to get out of that bay. A mile or so at easy throttle uses very little diesel, which is why those tend to be the simple ones.

The pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to Audley Cricket Club, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

Three things help when you ring from near Audley Library: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our engineers work, and so the place itself is rarely the trouble — we'd much rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We will drain the Vauxhall Astra, change your filter where there is a workable one, flush your lines then put fresh fuel through the full system, as by this point the worst of that is resting in your lines instead of in that tank.

Flushed, not cleared — that's what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Audley Theatre needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this job usually kicks off, and where a big part of that closes. Still at Shell? Then that is typically where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

At a garage, it is halted with the motor never fired, and nowhere else manages it. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where your car is.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Well worth it. Moving it four spaces doesn't merit cranking the motor.

Places our vans cover in The Quarry

These same journeys bring us to Wereton, Audley, Shraleybrook, Park End and Miles Green besides The Quarry, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places across Staffordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Ring us to ask rather than assuming — county lines especially, and wherever the satnav can get wrong.

The map is the patch this page includes. The lot is territory our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

Stuck at the kerbside around The Quarry

Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere suitable. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge on Moat Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that is a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Whether you stay by the motor or step away from it hangs on if being nearby feels sensible. Never fire it up to get to a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mixture deeper into your fuel system. However difficult the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for your car than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, then read below

Your M6 is the road that matters here, and sits under a mile from The Quarry. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what we bring.

Where is The Quarry?

The Quarry is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Staffordshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 627 residents. The Quarry sits at an elevation of 129 metres, approximately 6.3 miles from Stoke-on-Trent, and is near other local places such as Wereton and Audley. The Quarry is part of the wider West Midlands region, located about 141.3 miles from London.

What follows when we reach you in The Quarry

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.
  • The polluted fuel is drawn from your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • The engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Quarry is a different job

Do not start it: that opening step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own The Quarry page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in The Quarry?

One number would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank can hold.
  • The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from The Quarry drivers

Fuel drains on a The Quarry petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we visit Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's salvageable a lot more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

The motor remains off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
