Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Rock

Pause, and keep the motor off — not on, and not for a second to move the vehicle. The next few minutes decide it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run normally comes down to clearing and flushing, on the spot. From here on, in order, for anywhere in The Rock:

Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

In this order, all before everything else:

  • Ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank towards the components it damages.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it just leaves you with extra of the same blend.
  • Make the vehicle simple to see before anything else — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.
  • Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the staff to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump. Don't start it to move it, however short the way.
  • Hold on to the receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are printed on it, and they're what our engineers ask for first.

On the M54, under a mile from The Rock, the next junction is the place to leave it; elsewhere, the first safe location to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

Has it run yet? The fork in each The Rock fuel drain

From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.

If it has not once been started:

  • Only the tank has petrol in it so far.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of that.
  • No place is better, and it's why the first step matters so much.

If your engine has run, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been pulled out of your tank, through your filter then into the fuel lines.
  • On a longer run it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.
  • Miles is what makes it a larger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

Petrol doesn't lubricate. Diesel does, oiling the pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does. In that tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm. Once it is pumped, petrol begins wearing whatever moves it.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from The Rock: what to have ready

A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that circles.

  • Where you are. A postcode beginning TF3 5 is the best place to start.
  • Wherever you have parked, the road's name helps — whether that is Broom Drive or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Sainsbury's, for example — and it's much quicker to find.
  • Make and model of your car, and the fact it's a diesel.
  • Say which went in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for The Rock.
  • About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
  • The mileage it did, and how heavily, if it has run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's authorisation for this work, and sorting it before we get there is quicker than afterwards.

Call 0333 366 0103 once you have got that together — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

The Rock fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm whilst you wait. So hold to these.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, wait with it.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a few yards.
  • Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.
  • A DIY drain misses your fuel that has already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous besides.
  • Keep the ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

  • First, three queries: which fuel was put in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers set this job, so the quote follows them.
  • That tank is drained. The contaminated mixture comes from your tank.
  • If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they are flushed.
  • Then the filter: changed where there's a usable one, cleared where there is not.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.
  • The first start on new diesel. When priming is done, the engine is started and we make sure that it runs smoothly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our technicians head off. If it has been noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual, and the car goes back to normal use straight away.

The Rock, after the fuel drain: back on the road

  • Drive normally. There is nothing unusual to do once it has been started on fresh fuel.
  • Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over then ring us back.
  • The paperwork covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • Next time, read the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
