The Roe: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop, then keep your engine off — not on, and not for a moment to shift the car. Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is usually a simple drain and a flush, done where the car stands, and what you do in the next few minutes decides that far more than anything else. What follows is the order from this point, wherever around The Roe you happen to be.

Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

In this sequence, all before anything else:

  • The keys out of the ignition. Switching the ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, while priming pulls petrol out of the tank towards the components it damages. Leave the car off altogether.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
  • Get your car easy to see first — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.
  • The attendants will normally help you roll it clear of the pump. Ask, and move it by hand — not on the engine, even for a couple of yards.
  • The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the receipt shows both. Keep it.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, pull over somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the Moreton Spur, under 25 miles from The Roe, that means the next junction. Stage one comes next.

The fork in each The Roe fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Motor never run at all?

  • All the petrol remains inside the tank, and only there.
  • A drain and flush, on the spot, is normally all of that.
  • No place is better, and it is why the first step matters so much.

If the motor has been run, even briefly:

  • Petrol has been pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the lines.
  • Your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors get it on a longer run.
  • Mileage is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not. In that tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. As soon as it is pumped, petrol starts grinding whatever moves it.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from The Roe: what to have ready

A little preparation is the difference between a technician that finds you and a van that circles.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode starting LL17 0 is the ideal place to start.
  • Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that's Roe Park or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.
  • What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — like the one outside Co-op Food.
  • Make and model of the vehicle, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a different job with its own page for The Roe, and so tell us which.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — whichever gives us how much.
  • Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far and how hard.
  • Whose motor it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and that's quicker settled before we arrive than after.

Call 0333 366 0103 once you have got that together — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

Waiting for a fuel drain in The Roe: what to do

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So stick to these.

  • Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it stands, wait with it.
  • No one — however kind — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift your car a short way.
  • Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out once more.
  • A home-made drain misses the fuel that has already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous besides.
  • The ignition remains off. Even for the radio or the windows.

Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

  • The price comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and whether it's run — because those replies decide the job.
  • Emptying it is how the blend gets taken from your tank.
  • The lines are flushed. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond your tank, and the lines are carrying it.
  • Your filter is sorted. Cleared, or swapped where the car has a workable one.
  • Your system is primed on clean diesel.
  • Our engineers start the car only after clean diesel has gone in and primed the system, then confirm that it's running correctly.

Our engineers remain until it is running on new diesel. The vehicle returns to normal use at once, and permanent damage is very rare if it has been spotted early.

Once your fuel drain is done: driving around The Roe again

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving is all.
  • Pull over and call us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • The documents covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
