Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Straits

Never turn on the engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not yet run, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, across The Straits and the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone so we can tell you what happens next before you do anything else.

What to try first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And once started, never believe it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which draws the petrol out of your tank then into just those components.
  • Never tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to handle, and our team would rather get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on The Straits, put the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning DY3 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Three answers shape the full call-out: the fuel you put in, the ballpark measure involved, plus if it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Ring us before you move the car. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat this morning, and the car at Coseley ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is inert, and any damage was done on the trip in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle draws little of it. Petrol into a diesel BMW 3 Series somewhere in The Straits, a boot packed with shopping, and you stuck outside The Co-operative Food — ring us. Leaving that space is never worth a restart. Your tank gets emptied where it waits, the fuel lines flushed, new diesel in, and you get home.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how the trip to Higharcal Wood went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel leaks past the close-fitting parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Audi A3 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, turn off then ring us.

Our engineers purge your lines instead of only emptying that tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up by St Andrew a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned uneven, and the diesel Citroen C4 is now resting by Baggeridge Toposcope. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly rather than your engine failing — and since there's no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven again before somebody calls. Don't. Switch it off then ring us.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job usually kicks off, and where a good part of that ends. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's agreement, that is a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Nowhere except a forecourt can this be stopped with your motor still unstarted. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

Move it out of the way if the staff offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Coverage near The Straits

As a residential suburb, The Straits has a frequent call, and its neighbours round about go with it on that same trip: Gornalwood and Lower Gornal, Ruiton and Gospel End Village, Gospel End.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of towns around West Midlands, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Phone to check instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav can misread.

The area this page spans is on the map. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

The Straits: broken down wherever you parked

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over at all. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Irving Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you remain by the motor or stand away from it turns on whether sitting in it feels sensible. Do not start it up to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into your fuel system. However difficult the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then check this

The local M5 is the road that matters here, and it runs under 10 miles from The Straits. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It changes what we bring.

Where's The Straits?

The Straits is a suburban area located on the riverside in the West Midlands, with an elevation of around 130 metres. The Straits sits near the city of Wolverhampton, approximately 4.4 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Gornalwood and Lower Gornal. The Straits has a population of around 2776 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. The Straits is situated about 110.9 miles northwest of London.

What we do when we reach you around The Straits

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The contaminated fuel comes out of that tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Once it's started, our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

After that it's ready to set off. There's no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around The Straits?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the issue beneath it's a separate one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal around The Straits has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

The Straits costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We can't put one price on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank holds.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

The Straits motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in The Straits?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more regularly than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Shut off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
