The Valley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Don't fire up the engine. If the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not run, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, all over The Valley and the remainder of Cheshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. We shall show you what the next part will be. Phone — this comes ahead of anything else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Never start the car — and don't trust it when it fires up. This is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a few miles. It is not fine. It is grinding your fuel system while you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.
- Do not water down it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Collins Street, anywhere — a tricky location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
- Before you phone, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning CW2 7 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what was put in, about how much, and whether the car has been run. Your replies determine everything that follows.
At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel
A good chunk of the work is finished at the pump, because that's where it usually begins. If you are still at the forecourt at Morrisons, that is generally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.
No place except the forecourt can it be stopped with your engine still unrun. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines along with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the car stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.
Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Morrisons, somewhere around The Valley? Then ring us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to leave the bay. Someone gets to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile draws hardly anything, and so these are often the straightforward jobs.
Don't chance it. The journey home from The Hop Pole is quite possible, which is precisely the problem — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the parts your fuel is meant to protect. Phone us, and let the BMW 3 Series stay where it is.
Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while your car stands, as a diesel Mercedes C-Class left at Tipkinder Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.
Ringing from close to All Saints Parish Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself barely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd far rather have a cramped spot than a car somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Peugeot 3008, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not the tank.
Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Audi A6, a fill-up close to St Mary's Caritas Centre Crewe that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.
The Valley plus the areas beside it
The Valley is a residential suburb, and our team are out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual runs: Crewe, Wistaston Green, Woolstanwood, Marshfield Bank and Coppenhall.
If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns across Cheshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. Call us and check rather than guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever a satnav tends to struggle with.
Look at our map for the area shown on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is territory our technicians serve, and none of that requires the vehicle to travel to us.
Stuck at the kerb somewhere in The Valley?
Some people have no sensible place to stop at all. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Alton Street because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it's the usual kind.
Remain with your car while it is sensible to sit inside, but clear of the car when it is not. Do not restart your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into the fuel system. We will bring the van to an inconvenient spot without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than driving on.
Run it already? Stop, and read this
under 5 miles from The Valley, the local M6 is what counts here. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible exit and turn off. Long run? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.
The Valley itself
The Valley is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 46 metres. The Valley lies near several notable towns, including Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent, and is part of a larger network of residential communities in the region. The Valley has a population of approximately 6926 people, predominantly living in terraced housing.
What happens when our technicians reach you in The Valley
- The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.
- Out comes the tainted fuel.
- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that started the problem.
- We pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.
- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.
That leaves your car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in The Valley?
Don't start it: that opening step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.
AdBlue removal around The Valley has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around The Valley
What shifts the price is laid out below, because the job is not one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single price on this page.
- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether our van can safely get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.
Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around The Valley
Fuel drains on a The Valley petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than people assume.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it does not put back what petrol has diluted. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is.
You, and the car, still together?
Don't turn the engine on again.
If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
