Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Willows? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across The Willows and the remainder of Lincolnshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Our engineers will tell you what your next stage will be. Call us — that happens ahead of anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That's why you do not crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it protects the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of that tank and into exactly those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, and we would much rather travel to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Hillary Way, switch the hazards on and keep it there.
  • Before you call, work out your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning DN37 9 — that's what determines whether our van shows up or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has run — those three replies settle the entire job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through your high-pressure pump in real volume on the drive in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Renault Megane outside Great Coates while the work happens, and we would very much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

You'll be urged to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside Willows Academy, a misfilled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond the fuel filter toward your pump. Let them grumble. Call us.

The parts that should be getting oiled are wearing down instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and pulls away quite happily. Risk the trip home from The Valiant? Don't. Ring us then leave the Nissan Qashqai where it is.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to The Queens Green Canopy (The Platinum Jubilee 2022), it's doing none of it now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the car home to buy yourself any.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned uneven, and your diesel Volkswagen Touran is now sitting close to The Willows Library. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully not your engine packing up — and as there is no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven again before anyone calls. Do not. Switch it off and call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in The Willows

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of the job starts at a pump, so a big chunk of it is done at one. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, so if you're still at JET that's normally where the drain happens.

The forecourt is the only spot this gets spotted before your engine has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will usually help you push the vehicle clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Shifting it four lengths doesn't merit starting it.

Can our technicians reach your corner of The Willows?

These same journeys get us to Great Coates, Little Coates, Wybers Wood, Yarborough and Littlefield as well as The Willows, which is a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. The places above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places across Lincolnshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Ring us to check instead of assuming — borders particularly, and anywhere your satnav tends to struggle with.

Use the map for the ground shown on this page. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory we work on, and none of it asks the car to move to us.

Roadside call-outs around The Willows

The chance to pull in anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge on Service Road 23, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you wait beside the car or move away from it depends on whether staying there seems wise. Never restart it to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into your fuel system. We'll send the van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for the car that is a lot better than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M180 is the road that matters here, and sits under 15 miles from The Willows. A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and never start it to move it. It affects what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is The Willows?

The Willows is a suburban area located on the coast of Lincolnshire, with an elevation of around 8 metres above sea level. The Willows sits near several other small communities, including Great Coates and Little Coates, and is close to the larger city of Kingston upon Hull. The Willows has a population of approximately 4169 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. The Willows is situated in a region that is generally flat and low-lying, with Wybers Wood nearby.

What comes next when we get to you around The Willows

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The contaminated mixture is drawn out of the tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Willows

Don't crank it: that first rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.

AdBlue removal in The Willows has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We handle both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in The Willows?

What moves the price is listed below, because this job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank can hold.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from The Willows motorists

At a petrol station in The Willows, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers fear.
