Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Thomastown? Don't Start It

Never fire up the motor. If the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Thomastown and the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us before all else begins, so you will hear what follows next.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That is why you don't start the vehicle, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Leave the ignition off as well. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into just those components.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Tylcha Wen Terrace? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting CF39 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • What got in, about how many litres, and if the car has fired — the three details shape the full call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

Most of the work begins at a forecourt, which means a fair share of that is finished there. Still at Gulf? Then that is normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before your motor has run — a garage is the one spot the mistake ends up spotted. Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Move it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Thomastown

The tricky part is the bay, not the fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height limit on the way in that determines if a technician can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Co-Op, mention how much space there is around you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians attend often. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Renault Clio, it gets rolled with your engine off, and not out of fuss over a handful of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that blend departs that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier spot have silently made a bigger job of what was simply a motor standing still.

Straightforward job, this one — until somebody drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 parked by Boars Head with petrol in that tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park it then call us once it is light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the piston rings then into the oil.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Ford Focus left near Coedely Community Centre hardly two streets on. Phone us, then leave the car off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence cleaning your lines instead of only clearing that tank.

The smaller petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than careless. Strange places see most of it for that reason. So: filled up close to Saint David's Church without thinking, in a diesel Dacia Duster you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone spots it, and distance settles how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

A person confident will tell you to drain the vehicle and put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Mercedes A-Class by Capel Farm Community Centre and the motor will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is pull it back through the pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The system gets flushed, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed vehicle from one that simply starts.

Parts our team reach around Thomastown

Tyn-y-bryn, Tonyrefail, Bryngolau, Coedely, Rhiwinder — all of these on our trips that carry us out to Thomastown itself, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for most locations in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing about if our engineers come. Near a boundary, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Ring us to ask instead of guessing.

See our map for the area included on this page. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to travel to us.

Stranded at the roadside anywhere in Thomastown?

The opportunity to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge of Penygarreg Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Fine right there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Move out and away from it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered. However inconvenient the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

This is where the local M4 counts, under 5 miles away from Thomastown. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What we bring changes.

Thomastown itself

Thomastown is a suburban area in Rhondda Cynon Taf, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 116 metres. Thomastown lies near the communities of Tyn-y-bryn, Tonyrefail, and Bryngolau, and is approximately 12.6 miles from Cardiff. Thomastown has a population of around 2048 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Thomastown is also relatively close to the Welsh capital, with London being around 141.9 miles away.

What we do when we arrive with you in Thomastown

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Out goes the contaminated fuel.
  • We clean your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in the system is not what created the problem.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running properly.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Thomastown AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the issue underneath it is a separate one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Thomastown has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

Thomastown pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We cannot put one figure on this page frankly, because this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank holds.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Thomastown drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Thomastown petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more frequently than people fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Do not turn it back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
