Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Thongsbridge? Don't Start It

Never fire up the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Thongsbridge and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us and then our technicians will explain what comes from here before you do any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • As you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you do not start it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which carries this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, and we would much rather drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Heys Road, switch those hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Before you dial, have your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts HD9 7 — that is what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Three details settle the entire job: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark measure of it, plus whether it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

How many miles you went is what we query, not how long your car has been parked — and this is why. Diesel does two roles on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried refuel on the trip in, the penny dropping at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Brockholes since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were covered with your pump running on a fluid robbed of most of its protection. Phone then leave the vehicle just where it stands.

Petrol in your Audi A4, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Aldi, somewhere around Thongsbridge? Then phone, and leave the motor out of it — not even to exit that space. Somebody heads your way. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these are often the simple jobs.

Somebody will urge you to move it out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags by New Mill Infant School is an inconvenience; the same vehicle fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol past your filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let people moan, and give us a call.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Thongsbridge Tennis & Fitness Club. For a diesel Citroen C3 whose engine has turned, that's about the best version there is. Phone us, and let the vehicle stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just the tank emptied.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, clattering: that is a misfuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong. Never restart the car to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, close to Wooldale Methodist Free Church or anywhere else.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

Much of this work starts at a forecourt, so a big chunk of that ends up completed on site. The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Murco? Given the station's agreement, that's a place we work, and often.

The forecourt is the single place this can be halted before your engine has started. Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.

The staff will generally offer to roll the car clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Cranking the car just to move four vehicle lengths is not.

Thongsbridge plus the towns beside it

These same trips take us to Town End, Wooldale, Lydgate, Netherthong and Cliff along with Thongsbridge, which is a village.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of towns around West Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours. Near the border, or anywhere your satnav struggles with? Contact us and check instead of assuming.

The map shows the area this page includes. Every bit of that is territory we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped at the kerb anywhere in Thongsbridge?

Not everybody gets a sensible spot to pull over. A normal call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Mill Race Fold or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Fine where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Never start up the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system. Our van heading to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled

The local Outlane Interchange is the road which matters now, and sits under 10 miles from Thongsbridge. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and never start it to move it. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring changes.

A little about Thongsbridge

Thongsbridge is a village situated in a riverside location in West Yorkshire, with a population of around 2207 people. Thongsbridge has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by detached homes. Thongsbridge sits at an elevation of 170 metres, near to the communities of Town End, Wooldale, and Lydgate. Thongsbridge is located approximately 13 miles from Wakefield and 159 miles from London.

When our technicians arrive with you in Thongsbridge: what follows

  • Our technicians establish what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled from that tank.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
  • Our engineers put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • After it's fired up, our engineers check it runs correctly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Thongsbridge AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Thongsbridge page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Thongsbridge

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what moves it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach your car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. If it is not pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Thongsbridge drivers

Fuel drains on a Thongsbridge petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable a lot more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Thongsbridge and throughout West Yorkshire.
