Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Thorney?

Don't fire up the motor. If the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Thorney and the remainder of Cambridgeshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. We shall tell you what the following part is. Phone — this comes before all else.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically can't run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Most people get that muddled. It isn't all right — that fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Our team would rather drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Abbey Place, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • The van turning up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode starting PE6 0, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.
  • What went in, about how many litres, and also whether your car has fired — the three details determine the entire visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Much of this job starts at a pump, meaning a good part of it is completed there. The drain usually takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere we work, and often.

No place except the forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still cold. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where the car is. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the offer. Starting the car just for four car lengths? Never.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Thorney

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside The Co-operative Food now. Time passed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

Somebody will urge you to move the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside The Duke of Bedford Primary School is a nuisance; the same vehicle restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes the lines and drags more petrol past the filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let everyone moan, then phone us.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through — that's the whole process. It accounts for the usual Thorney Park call too: a diesel Peugeot 308 that went out without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full the tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Dacia Duster by Thorney Museum.

By this point that tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes A-Class that got by Thorney War Memorial needs your circuit flushed, not emptied.

Service near Thorney

As a village, Thorney sees a steady call, while the places nearby come with it on that same round: Nene Terrace and North Side, Eye Green and Eye, Dowsdale.

There are separate pages for most towns in Cambridgeshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Assuming is the habit to avoid, particularly on a boundary or anywhere the satnav fails. Ring us to enquire.

See our map for the patch included on this page. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car does not need to come to us.

Broken down on the roadside near Thorney

Not everyone gets the chance to pull over anywhere sensible. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Wisbech Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Fine right there? Wait beside it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. Do not fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system. A technician driving to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where your A1(M) counts, under 15 miles out of Thorney. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not start it to reposition. Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

All about Thorney

Thorney is a village situated on the banks of the River Nene in Cambridgeshire, with a low elevation of around 7 metres above sea level. Thorney lies near the city of Peterborough, approximately 6.6 miles away, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Nene Terrace and Eye Green. Thorney has a population of around 716 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Thorney is located about 77 miles north of London, in the Eastern region of England.

What follows when we reach you in Thorney

  • Our technicians establish what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • Away flows the contaminated mixture.
  • We clean the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is left in the system is not what started the trouble.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Your engine is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Thorney is a distinct matter

Don't crank it: that first step stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

AdBlue removal in Thorney has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Thorney?

One number would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it isn't pressing — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Thorney drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Thorney. Can you drain the car here?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this happens. Routinely, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is salvageable much more often than motorists fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Keep the car switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
