Petrol in Diesel

Thorpe Lea: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, across Thorpe Lea and the remainder of Surrey, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. A single call our way is plenty: our engineers will tell you what comes from here. Try it first.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and don't believe it if it runs. This is the thing drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just won't run, so the person stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and drives off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It's wearing out your fuel system while you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those parts.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Keswick Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd place suits us better than a started motor.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts TW20 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how much, and whether the car has run. These three details determine the entire job.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

Much of this work starts at the pump, so a fair chunk of that is finished there. The drain typically happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's permission, that's a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

No place except a garage can it be stopped with your motor still cold. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines along with the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we put it right where the car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car just to move four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Thorpe Lea

The enquiry our engineers want runs like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off at Waitrose. What we're really asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later — that is what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags by Manorcroft Primary School, a misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming happens with every start and more petrol goes through your filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Give us a call.

Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them when we arrive at your car in the car park outside The Robin Hood. Then the polluted blend comes out of the tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Peugeot 3008 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system bled, our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before you drive away.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car waits, since a diesel Mercedes E-Class left outside Thorpe Lea Recreation Ground is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went limp, the idle turned lumpy, and the diesel Audi Q5 is now waiting close to Egham Town Football Club. That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly not your engine packing up — and as there's no warning light for it, cars in that position normally get driven once more before somebody phones. Please don't. Switch it off and phone us.

Thorpe Lea and the places near it

Thorpe Lea is a residential suburb, and we go out to the town and to the places around it on the same journeys: Egham Hythe, Egham, Ripley Springs, Thorpe and Stroude.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and most towns around Surrey have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Presuming is the thing to skip, particularly on a border or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Ring us and ask.

This map shows the patch the page spans. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the car does not need to move to us.

Stranded on the roadside around Thorpe Lea

Not everybody gets the chance to pull in anywhere suitable. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on Thirlmere Close, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Fine right there? Remain by it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Driving on does the car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient location, and that is no bother for us.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M25 counts, under a mile away from Thorpe Lea. A misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Come off at the next safe junction, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to move it. Long trip? Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

Thorpe Lea is a relatively small community with a population of around 2874 residents.

What follows when our technicians get to you in Thorpe Lea

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • Our technicians drain that tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Our engineers turn it on and check it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it is ready to set off. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Thorpe Lea?

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Thorpe Lea page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Thorpe Lea

We cannot put one price on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Thorpe Lea drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station around Thorpe Lea, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work takes place. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off. It is recoverable a lot more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is how it remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists expect.
