Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tillerman Court? Don't Start It

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Tillerman Court and the remainder of Merseyside, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Ring us before all else happens, and you'll see what comes next.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And once started, never rely on it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition be as well. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Don't add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Derby Lane? Hazards on, and keep it there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Before you phone, have your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning L13 6 — that's what settles whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, roughly how much, and if your car has been turned over. Your responses settle all that comes after.

Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

Most of the work starts at a forecourt, meaning a large share of that is finished on site. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where this drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the one location this ends up halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key.

Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the assistance. Cranking it to move four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tillerman Court

We're in car parks like the one outside Tesco all the time, and it is rarely the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height bar at the way in, which decides whether a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there's no space to work alongside the Renault Clio, our technicians move it without the engine. That isn't fuss over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of that tank toward your pump, and a vehicle shuffled twice for a nicer space is gradually a worse job than one no one touched.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone us. It's twenty to nine by St Anne's (Stanley) Junior Mixed and Infant School, you are late, and your receipt shows unleaded — and although three miles in your Audi A4 seems like nothing, fuel is delivered to demand, and a frantic run demands plenty of that.

Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Vauxhall Astra did on the way to Doric Park, it's doing none of it now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer prepared. Almost no one knows how full your tank was in a vehicle picked up two days ago, and we work that out on site. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Peugeot 208 close to Old Swan Library.

Purged, not emptied — that is what a diesel Volvo XC60 which got as far as St Paul's Stoneycroft needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail, none of which empties with that tank, and so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the damage.

Areas our vans reach near Tillerman Court

Old Swan, Stanley, Stoneycroft, Oak Hill Park, Knotty Ash — every one of those on our journeys that bring us out to Tillerman Court itself, a neighbourhood.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most locations in Merseyside, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours. On the border, or anywhere your phone can't find? Contact us and enquire instead of guessing.

That map outlines the ground this page includes. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers work on, and none of it requires your car to move to us.

Broken down on the kerbside near Tillerman Court

Some drivers have no sensible place to stop whatsoever. A common call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge on Ravenswood Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Clear of the car if it's not wise to wait there, beside it when it is. Never fire it up to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system. We will take our van to an inconvenient location without any bother, and for the vehicle that's much better than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then check below

The local M62 is the road that matters here, and sits under a mile from Tillerman Court. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never start it to move it. On a longer drive — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.

Where's Tillerman Court?

Tillerman Court is a locality in Merseyside, situated inland at an elevation of 62 metres, approximately 2.6 miles from Liverpool. Tillerman Court forms part of the larger urban area surrounding Liverpool, with nearby places including Old Swan, Stanley, and Stoneycroft. Tillerman Court is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, typical of many areas in the North West of England.

Once our engineers arrive with you around Tillerman Court: what we do

  • Our technicians check what got in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • That tank gets emptied of everything.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, and so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime your system.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running smoothly.

Then it is ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught soon, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Tillerman Court

Never fire it up: that first step holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Tillerman Court has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Tillerman Court

What changes the figure is listed below, because the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Tillerman Court

Fuel drains on a Tillerman Court petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's permission our technicians work at Sainsbury's and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable far more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
