Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tintagel? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Tintagel or the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone and then our team shall tell you what follows from here before you try much else.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It is not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Turning the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so never add diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Fore Street? Hazards on, then leave it there. A difficult location suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Have your position ready before you phone. A postcode beginning PL34 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the motor has been turned over. The responses shape whatever follows.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Renault Megane parked outside the nearest station this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew thinned diesel through your pump was the trip in. Phone before you set off to collect the car.

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Spar. That's the call our technicians like, as the question underneath it's about amount through your pump not hours on the clock.

Twenty to nine. By Tintagel Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn your hazards on, leave the ignition alone, then phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Emptying your Nissan Qashqai, changing your filter where there's a workable one, cleaning the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the entire system: that's the job, and it's shaped by the worst of it waiting in the lines instead of in your tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near King Arthur's Great Halls — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest location our technicians work, so the location itself is rarely the issue. A narrow parking space beats a vehicle driven somewhere more convenient.

By now the tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mix goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Ford Kuga that got near North Shore Gallery wants its circuit purged. Emptying is not the same thing.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair portion of the work gets completed at a pump, as that is where it mostly kicks off. Still at Gulf? Then that's generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere else other than a forecourt can it be spotted with the motor still cold. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The staff will normally happily roll the car clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Tintagel plus the areas near it

Those same runs get us to Treven, Bossiney, Tregatta, Truas and Trenale along with Tintagel, which is a coastal village.

Our technicians still come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most towns across Cornwall, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Phone and enquire rather than assuming, particularly if you are on a boundary or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.

This map shows the area the page includes. Every bit of it is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move the vehicle anywhere.

Tintagel: stranded where you parked

A chance to stop anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge of B3263 or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Whether you stay by your car or stand away from it rests on if being in it looks sensible. Don't restart it to get to a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the fuel system. Driving on does your car far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has gone

Here is where the M5 counts, over 50 miles from Tintagel. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes rough, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not restart it to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What we bring differs.

About Tintagel

What our engineers do when we get to you in Tintagel

  • The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and if the engine has run.
  • The contaminated fuel comes out of that tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that started the problem.
  • The system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • When it's turned on, our technicians check it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. We do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

Tintagel AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Tintagel has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Tintagel?

What shifts the figure is listed below, because this job is not one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Tintagel

Fuel drains on a Tintagel petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent we work at Valley Truckle Filling Station and the other forecourts locally regularly.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable much more commonly than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Shut off is the way it remains.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car stay that way. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people expect.
