Petrol in Diesel

Tircanol: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on your engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not run, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Tircanol and the rest of Swansea, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us before all else starts, so you'll hear what comes after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. That is why you never fire it up, and why you never trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Switching the ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cwrt Cilmeri, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a motor that never shifted.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning SA6 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what got in, roughly how much, and whether your car has been turned over. The answers shape whatever happens next.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A large part of this work ends up finished at a pump, because that's where it mostly begins. Still at Asda? Then that is usually where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with the engine never started, and nowhere else does it. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

The staff will usually happily roll it out from the pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing. Shifting the car four bays doesn't justify firing it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tircanol

If you've put petrol in your diesel Skoda Octavia around Tircanol and you're now stuck outside Lidl with a boot full of shopping, ring us. Don't crank it again to exit that spot. Our technicians will head your way, drain your tank, clean those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at easy throttle draws hardly any of it, which is why such jobs are often the straightforward ones.

Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, ring us. Three miles in your Audi A4 seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — and a hurried morning run asks for plenty.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off and call us. Fine on the way out to Swansea Vale Local Nature Reserve, flat on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Dacia Duster went, the less of that pressure it held.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked near Seion Newydd Chapel. For a diesel Peugeot 3008 whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not sloppy — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up near Morriston Library that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

Will our technicians serve your corner of Tircanol?

Tircanol is a small village, and our vans get out to it and to anywhere near it on the usual journeys: Cwm-felin-fach, Morriston, Pen-rhiw-forgan, Llanlleian-wen and Ynysforgan.

There are pages for most places across Swansea, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Call us and check rather than presuming, especially when you're on the border or anywhere a satnav gets wrong.

This map is the area the page covers. The lot is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Stranded on the kerbside near Tircanol

A chance to pull over somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone. A routine call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge on Cwm Arian or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Whether you stay with the motor or move away from it depends on if staying nearby feels safe. Never restart it to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into your fuel system. However difficult the spot, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M4 comes in — under a mile away from Tircanol. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the first safe junction, turn off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. On a longer run — anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what we bring.

The visit around Tircanol, step by step

  • We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Our technicians empty the tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that caused the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • We fire it up and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Tircanol?

The problem is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Tircanol has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Tircanol

What changes the figure is laid out below, because the job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank takes.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel queries from Tircanol motorists

At a petrol station around Tircanol, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

That engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let it remain that way. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists fear.
