Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tisbury
Do not fire up your engine. If the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Tisbury and the remainder of Wiltshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. We can show you what the following part will be. Phone — it goes before all else.
Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel
- Don't fire it up — and never rely on it if it runs. That is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is eating into your fuel system while you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off too — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those parts.
- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- We would rather get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on The Causeway, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode beginning SP3 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how many litres, and also whether the motor has run. Those three facts shape the entire call-out.
Quarter past eight, a rushed fill-up on the road in, and it dawns on you around eleven — by that point your diesel Renault Megane has been sitting at the nearest station for three hours. Phone us then keep it right where it stands. The journey in is the thing that counts most, because diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with the pump labouring on a liquid that had shed a great deal of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our engineers ask is how many miles you went, not how long your car has been sitting.
Petrol in the Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside The Co-operative Food, somewhere around Tisbury? Then call us, and leave the engine out of it — not even to get out of that space. A technician comes to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines purged, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls hardly anything, and so these are often the straightforward ones.
Twenty to nine. By St John's Church of England Primary School, Tisbury. Late already, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave the ignition alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of it.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past clearances instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it passes through — that is the entire process. It explains the ordinary King George's Field Recreation Ground call too: a diesel Audi A4 that drove out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.
Flushed, not emptied — that's what a diesel Vauxhall Astra which got as far as St John the Baptist needs. Running a diesel puts that blend into the fuel filter, your lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with your tank, and so by now your tank holds the smaller part of the problem.
At the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel
A fair part of the job is done at a pump, as that is where it often begins. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station? Given the station's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and often.
Before your engine has fired — the forecourt is the single place it ends up caught. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where your car is.
Staff will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Welcome the offer. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.
Can our technicians reach your side of Tisbury?
Tisbury is a village, and our technicians head out to the town and to the villages around it on the same runs: Tuckingmill, Upper Chicksgrove, East Hatch, Wardour and West Hatch.
Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and the majority of places in Wiltshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Close to a border, or somewhere a satnav gets wrong? Call us to check rather than assuming.
The ground the page covers is on this map. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to move to us.
Stranded at the kerbside in Tisbury
Some people get no sensible place to pull in whatsoever. A normal call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge beside Beckett Street or in a lay-by with your hazards on.
Sit with your car while it is sensible to sit there, but clear of the vehicle when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. A van driving to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.
Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles
The M27 is the road that counts now, and it sits under 25 miles from Tisbury. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.
Do not start it to move it. Pull off at the next sensible exit and switch off. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.
Where is Tisbury?
Tisbury is a village in south Wiltshire, situated on the banks of the River Nadder at an elevation of around 100 metres. Tisbury lies near the edge of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the villages of Tuckingmill and Upper Chicksgrove. Tisbury has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent, and is located approximately 12 miles from the city of Salisbury. Tisbury is also within commuting distance of London, being around 90 miles to the southwest of the capital.
What follows when our technicians get to you around Tisbury
- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- Your tank is emptied of it.
- Our technicians clean your fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the issue.
- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- The motor is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.
That leaves your car ready to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Tisbury?
The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.
Both are ours. There is a separate Tisbury page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Tisbury?
One price wouldn't be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much your tank holds.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
- Where the car is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.
A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.
Petrol in diesel queries from Tisbury motorists
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Tisbury?
A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.
Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. What determines how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more often than drivers expect.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
Waiting next to it?
Keep the engine switched off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists assume.
