Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Toftshaw

Do not fire up the motor. While the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Toftshaw and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Ring us so we shall explain what comes next before you do any more.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Do not fire it up. Started anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car generally will not run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition stays off also — turn it on and you commonly prime your system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so never put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would sooner get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on New Toftshaw, that means hazards on then leave it.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting BD4 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.
  • Three details decide the whole call-out: the stuff you put in, the approximate volume of it, plus if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where this job mostly begins, and where a large part of that closes. Still at Esso? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.

At a garage, this gets spotted with your engine never started, and nowhere else manages that. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Toftshaw

How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we are really asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry our technicians hope for goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off outside Bierley Mini Market.

Three answers decide much of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the vehicle in the car park at Tong Liberal Club. After that the contaminated mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines are flushed, and where your Mercedes C-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system primed, our technicians start the car and confirm it runs smoothly before you set off.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That's the full mechanism, and it explains the ordinary East Bierley Golf Club call: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that drove out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past tolerances instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

Our technicians clean your lines rather than only draining your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel BMW 5 Series parked up near The Life Centre a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Vauxhall Astra near Elim Pentecostal Church. You will not know how full your tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on site anyway. We ask as the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor knocks and smokes and flattens off.

Toftshaw and the places beside it

Bierley, Toftshaw Moor, Tong Street, East Bierley, East Bowling — each of them on the rounds that take us across to Toftshaw as well, a neighbourhood.

There are pages for the majority of places across West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list tells you nothing at all about if we come. Guessing is the habit to skip, above all on the boundary or somewhere a satnav gets lost. Phone to ask.

The area the page includes is on the map. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Toftshaw: stuck wherever you parked

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge beside Burberry Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Okay where you are? Sit by it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it. Do not start up your motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into your fuel system. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky spot, and that's no problem for us.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Your M606 is the road which matters now, and runs under a mile from Toftshaw. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you phone. It changes what we bring.

What happens when we get to you around Toftshaw

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Your tank gets drained of it.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running correctly.

From there, you are ready to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Toftshaw AdBlue removal is a different matter

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — never fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Toftshaw page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Toftshaw

We can't put one number on this page truthfully, as the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank can hold.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Toftshaw

At a petrol station around Toftshaw, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's agreement we attend Asda and the other forecourts locally all the time.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable far more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Your engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists fear.

Across West Yorkshire and in Toftshaw: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
