Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tolgullow

With your tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Tolgullow and the rest of Cornwall, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Ring us so we can show you what happens from here before you try any more.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Started all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that confused. It's not fine — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Chyrose Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Our van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning TR16 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you dial.
  • Three replies settle the whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the rough measure of it, and whether it has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat at Redruth since breakfast? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is harmless. It was the trip in that pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Call us before you fetch it.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it won't run, so the person stops there and the damage stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing had happened, while your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That is the catch, and it is why the diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly ordinary coming back from St Day and Carharrack Community School. They do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing warns you. Ring us with roughly how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

None of it is the engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the normal Unity Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle lumpy and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past clearances, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Mills Court Community Centre or anywhere else, and never start the vehicle to find a better location.

Drain it and put fresh diesel in — that's the suggestion you will get, usually from someone certain, and it is half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 near St Day Community Centre and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound plausible. What takes place next is the problem: the engine straight away draws the petrol left sitting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between the car being fixed and the car just starting.

Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

The work begins at the pump, usually. Frequently it finishes at one as well. Still at Texaco? Then that's generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere else but a garage can the mistake be stopped with the motor still untouched. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians deal with it where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The staff will normally offer to roll the car clear of the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Starting the car for four car lengths? Never.

Places we serve around Tolgullow

These same trips carry us to St Day, Vogue, Little Beside, Tolcarne and Crofthandy along with Tolgullow, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all towns around Cornwall, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Contact us to check rather than assuming — borders particularly, and wherever your satnav tends to misread.

Check this map for the patch covered here. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is territory we work on, and none of it needs your car to travel to us.

Stuck on the kerb anywhere around Tolgullow?

Not everybody has the chance to pull in somewhere sensible. A normal call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge on Wheal Gorland Road or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Sit by your car while it is sensible to sit inside, but out of the car when it isn't. Never fire up your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into your fuel system. However tricky the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local M5 comes in — over 50 miles away from Tolgullow. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in the van.

A little about Tolgullow

Tolgullow is a suburban area in Cornwall, situated inland at an elevation of 103 metres, approximately 6 miles from the city of Truro. Tolgullow is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential development. Tolgullow sits near several smaller communities, including St Day, Vogue, and Little Beside, in the wider Cornish countryside.

What follows when we get to you around Tolgullow

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work really is.
  • We clear that tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • What is left in your system should not be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running correctly.

Then it's ready to set off. There's no need for a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tolgullow is a different matter

Don't crank it: that first instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Tolgullow page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Tolgullow prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Tolgullow

Fuel drains on a Tolgullow petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Opie Oils, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more frequently than people fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Leave the car turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
