Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tollesby? Don't Start It

If you have not started your engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Tollesby or the remainder of North Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. We will explain what your next move is. Ring us — that happens before anything else.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel performs two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, which draws the petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on A174, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.
  • Before you call, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts TS7 8 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what got in, approximately how much, and whether the car has been started. The answers settle whatever follows.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning drive running on a fluid that had shed a great deal of the protection it is built around. Diesel greases that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Renault Megane, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing outside Marton till it dawns on you at about eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed plenty, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about mileage not hours. Call us. Keep the vehicle just where it sits.

Twenty to nine. By Captain Cook Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Switch the hazard lights on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is supplied to demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Memorial Park in that diesel Peugeot 3008 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Calling from close to St Cuthbert's Parish Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for a van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself hardly counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would much rather have a cramped bay than a vehicle a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the BMW 1 Series, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the fuel lines and not that tank.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than after that. Then ring us about the Audi A6, the diesel one, close to Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. Do not worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — nearly no one can two days into a car, and it is something we check on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tollesby

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

It begins at a forecourt, generally. Quite often the job wraps up on site too. The drain normally happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Tesco Express? Given the site's permission, that is a place our engineers work, and routinely.

At the forecourt, this gets spotted with your motor never run, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where your car is.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Worth it. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Coverage around Tollesby

Tollesby is a small village, and so our technicians are out to it and to anywhere near it on the same trips: Marton, Coulby Newham, Easterside, Park End and Beechwood.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns across North Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Assuming is the thing to avoid, above all on a boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Contact us and check.

Use the map for the ground included on this page. The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. We work over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Kerbside call-outs across Tollesby

Not everyone has the chance to stop somewhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge beside A172, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Okay there? Wait beside it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Do not fire it up to get to a safer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. We will send our van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for the car that's far better than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the local A1(M) matters, under 15 miles away from Tollesby. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the next safe junction then turn off. On a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what we bring.

Where's Tollesby?

Tollesby is a locality situated on the riverside in North Yorkshire, with an elevation of 54 metres above sea level. Tollesby is located near the cities of Durham and Middlesbrough, and is close to the nearby places of Marton, Coulby Newham, and Easterside. Tollesby has a population of approximately 2665 people, and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing. Tollesby is some 213.7 miles north of London, in the north-east of England.

The job around Tollesby, step by step

  • The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Out flows the tainted mixture.
  • We flush the lines and clean the filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what started the problem.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The motor is fired up and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tollesby

Don't fire it up: that first rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Tollesby page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Tollesby

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Tollesby

I'm on a forecourt around Tollesby. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes. We work at Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is salvageable far more commonly than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no. Your pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
