Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ton Pentre?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Ton Pentre and the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Ring us before anything else starts, so you'll learn what happens after that.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Don't fire it up — and don't believe it when it starts. Here is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just will not run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It is not okay. It is grinding the fuel system while you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: flicking it on is often enough to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those components.
- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Our team would much rather drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Llanfoist Street, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting CF41 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.
- What got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether your car has run — these three replies settle your whole visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt
Forecourts are where this job usually begins, and where a fair part of that ends. The drain generally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the owner's agreement, that is a spot our engineers work, and regularly.
At a forecourt, the mistake is stopped with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages it. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys.
Away from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Very much worth doing. Moving it four lengths does not justify cranking it.
Easy, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at easy throttle uses little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio somewhere in Ton Pentre, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stuck outside Lidl — ring us. Exiting the space isn't worth another start. Your tank gets emptied where it stands, the lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and you head home.
A passer-by will advise you to move the car out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags outside the local primary school is a nuisance; the same car started three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol through the filter then into your pump. Leave it, let everyone grumble, and ring us.
You drive off at the end, once we have started it and confirmed it runs smoothly on clean diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park outside The Windsor, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when we get to the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.
Nothing gets worse while it sits. Whatever the diesel Peugeot 208 did on the way to Valley Veterans Community Garden, it's doing none of that now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive it home to buy yourself any.
Ringing from close to The Phoenix? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a technician beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we'd far rather have a narrow space than a car somebody has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Kia Sportage, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not the tank.
Areas we serve near Ton Pentre
Ton Pentre is a residential suburb, and so our team are out to the town and to anywhere near it on the same journeys: Rhondda, Gelli, Pentre, Ystrad and Cwmparc.
If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all towns across Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to resist, above all on a border or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Call us to enquire.
That map shows the patch this page spans. The car doesn't need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Ton Pentre: broken down wherever you parked
Some drivers find no safe spot to stop whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Church Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that is a routine call for us instead of a rare one.
Clear of the car while it isn't wise to wait there, by it when it is. Never fire up your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the fuel system. Carrying on does the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient place, and that is no bother for us.
Driven it already? Pull over, and see this
The M4 is the one that matters now, and sits under 10 miles from Ton Pentre. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what our technicians bring.
A bit about Ton Pentre

Our call-out in Ton Pentre, step by step
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
- Your tank is drained of it.
- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clean the filter, so what's remaining in the system is not what started the problem.
- Our technicians pour new diesel in and prime your system.
- It is started with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running properly.
At that point it is ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Ton Pentre?
Never start it: that opening instruction applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Ton Pentre page. Both are ours to handle.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Ton Pentre
One figure would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank holds.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where the car is, and if a van can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.
Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Ton Pentre
I am on a forecourt in Ton Pentre. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more often than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a dealership, since we drain and flush the car wherever it is.
You, and your vehicle, still together?
Do not turn the car back on.
Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.
