Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tonedale?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Tonedale or the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Contact us before anything else starts, and you will learn what happens after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. That's why you do not crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition stays off too — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
  • Never thin it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Wardleworth Court? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky spot suits us better than a started diesel.
  • Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode beginning TA21 0 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has run. Those three replies determine the entire call-out.

How far you went is what our technicians query, not how long your vehicle has been standing — and here is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a fast fill-up on the trip in, the penny dropping around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan standing outside Taunton since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were covered with the pump working on a fluid stripped of a lot of its protection. Phone us and leave the vehicle precisely where it sits.

Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past your filter then into the pump. So a misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at Beech Grove Primary School is a nuisance, while the same motor fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will tell you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Leave it there, let people complain, and phone us.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Stedhams Covert in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of that.

Phoning from near Wellington Methodist Church? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for a technician next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we would much rather have a narrow space than a motor someone has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Dacia Duster, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not your tank.

That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor giving up — and with no warning for it, cars in that position typically get driven once more before anybody rings. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel BMW 1 Series now sitting close to Wellington Squash and Racketball Club. Turn the vehicle off then call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tonedale

Can petrol be taken from a diesel at a forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a fair chunk of that closes. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that is typically where this drain gets done — we work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

A forecourt is the only setting this can be halted before your engine has run. Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not justify firing the motor.

Parts our vans reach near Tonedale

Tone, Gundenham, Wellington, Rockwell Green, Westford — all of those on the rounds that bring us across to Tonedale too, a residential suburb.

There are pages for nearly all towns around Somerset, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from this list tells you nothing at all about whether we come. Close to a boundary, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Contact us and ask instead of presuming.

That map shows the patch this page includes. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

Broken down on the kerbside in Tonedale

Some people get no suitable place to pull over at all. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Canal Close as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Fine right there? Sit by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We will send the van to a tricky spot without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 3 miles out of Tonedale, the local M5 is what counts here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and do not start the car to move it. Long run? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

Tonedale itself

Tonedale is a suburban area in Somerset, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 59 metres, with the River Tone flowing nearby. Tonedale is located near the towns of Wellington and the villages of Tone and Gundenham, and is approximately 22 miles from Exeter. Tonedale has a population of around 2520 people and predominantly consists of terraced housing. Tonedale is also within commuting distance to larger cities, with London being around 139 miles away.

When our technicians reach you in Tonedale: what follows

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The polluted fuel comes from the tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians check it runs properly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

Tonedale AdBlue removal is a different job

The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Tonedale page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Tonedale?

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Tonedale motorists

At a petrol station around Tonedale, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. We attend BP and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the car off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't switch your engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining around Tonedale and throughout Somerset — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
