Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tongwell?
Don't turn on the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, throughout Tongwell and the remainder of Buckinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Our engineers can tell you what the next step will be. Phone — this comes before everything else.
The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for several miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And having started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: switching it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.
- Never thin it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on H4 Dansteed Way, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a car that never moved.
- Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning MK15 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
- Three answers settle your whole job: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
Tonight, please, rather than Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would more or less double the figure to no end. The Renault Clio can sit at Milton Keynes Central perfectly happily. Call from the platform if quicker; standing over us whilst our technicians work isn't required.
We'll head your way, empty the tank, purge those fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into the diesel BMW 3 Series in Tongwell and you're stuck outside Co-op Food with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and don't start it once more to leave the spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses little of it, which is why these tend to be the simple cases.
Every restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags by Willen Primary School is a nuisance, whereas the same motor fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Someone will advise you to move the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. Leave it there, let people moan, and ring us.
Your Ford Focus stays where it is in the car park by The Ship Ashore for the whole job, which generally runs like this. First we ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since, because much of the work rests on those replies. That tank is emptied of the polluted blend, the fuel lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With new diesel in and your system bled, your car is fired up and checked, and once it is running properly you drive away.
Here's the full process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Willen Labyrinth call — a diesel Mercedes E-Class, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it bleeds past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was built round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.
Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt
A big share of the job is completed at a forecourt, as that is where it mostly kicks off. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.
Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the only spot this is stopped. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car is.
The attendants will generally happily move the car out from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing. Firing it for four vehicle lengths? Don't.
Tongwell and the towns next to it
The same rounds bring us to Willen, Willen Park, Caldecote, Bolbeck Park and Downhead Park as well as Tongwell, which is a residential suburb.
If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of towns around Buckinghamshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours. Assuming is the habit to skip, above all on the boundary or anywhere the satnav goes wrong. Ring us and ask.
The patch the page covers is on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians serve, and none of that asks the vehicle to travel to us.
Tongwell: stuck wherever you parked
The chance to pull in somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge of Wellfield Court, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a routine call for us instead of an unusual one.
Whether you sit by the car or stand away from it depends on if staying nearby looks wise. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. We'll bring the van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
The M1 is the one which matters here, and lies under a mile from Tongwell. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Get off at the first safe exit, switch off, and don't start the car to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in our van.

What our technicians do when our technicians reach you in Tongwell
- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
- Out goes the tainted mixture.
- Our engineers flush the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in your system isn't what started the issue.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
- The engine is turned on and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Tongwell?
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — never crank it — yet this fault isn't. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.
Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Tongwell page. Both are ours to handle.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Tongwell
One price wouldn't be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:
- This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.
Tongwell motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
At a petrol station around Tongwell, can you do a fuel drain there?
A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's consent our engineers attend Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more regularly than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
You, and your car, still together?
Keep the engine shut off.
If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.
