Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Toothill?

Do not fire up your engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Toothill and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Ring us before everything else happens, and you will know what happens from there.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And if started, do not believe it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A car that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Toothill Road? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An awkward location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Get your location ready before you phone. A postcode beginning SO51 9 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what got in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has been turned over. The responses decide all that happens next.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Volkswagen Passat left outside Romsey this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked thinned diesel through the pump was the run in. Phone before you go to collect the car.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and mostly it won't run, so the person stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine starts, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be giving. That's the snag, and it's why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely normal coming back from Rownhams St John's Church of England Primary School. They do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about, and so nothing alerts you. Phone us with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to The Sling in that diesel Nissan Qashqai is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.

Hardly ever the trouble, the location. On-street is the usual location we work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Toothill Hill Fort, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Ford Focus gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not the tank.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, your idle turned uneven, and the diesel Mercedes E-Class is now sitting by St Johns Church Hall. That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly rather than the engine giving up — and because there is no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven once more before somebody phones. Please don't. Switch it off and ring us.

Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

A fair share of the job gets completed at a pump, since that is where it mostly starts. Still at BP? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the station.

A forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets caught before the motor has run. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the help. Cranking it just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Coverage near Toothill

Rownhams, Ashfield, Upton, Lee, Nursling — all of them on our trips that bring us out to Toothill itself, a rural hamlet.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Hampshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Assuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a border or anywhere a satnav struggles. Phone and enquire.

See the map for the ground included here. Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle never needs to move to us.

Stopped on the kerb somewhere around Toothill?

Some people find no suitable place to pull over whatsoever. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Packridge Lane as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of the car while it's not wise to wait in it, by it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. A van heading to an awkward location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Pull over, then check this

under a mile out of Toothill, your Nursling Spur Motorway is what matters here. A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they appear are normally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never start the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.

Where is Toothill?

Toothill is a small hamlet in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of 51 metres, approximately 4.9 miles from Southampton. Toothill lies near the communities of Rownhams, Ashfield, and Upton, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Toothill is a relatively small settlement, with a population of around 537 residents. Toothill is located within the South East region, about 69 miles from London.

When our technicians arrive with you in Toothill: what we do

  • The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.
  • Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the fuel system is not what started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • We start the car and check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very rare.

Toothill AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The issue is not the same, though the first instruction is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Toothill page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Toothill

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Toothill

Fuel drains on a Toothill petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit Kingslake Cars and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more commonly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it does not put back what petrol has diluted. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is the way it remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than people assume.
