Petrol in a Diesel Car in Top Lock: What Happens Now

Stop, then keep your engine off — not on, and not for a second to move the vehicle. Emptied then rinsed, right where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes to come far more than on everything else. From here on, in order, wherever you are around Top Lock:

Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

First, the following — in this order.

  • The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank towards the components it harms.
  • Topping up with diesel sounds like it thins the problem. It does not: nothing comes out, and that tank simply holds more of the same.
  • Make your car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.
  • The staff will normally help you push it away from the petrol pump. Ask, then roll it by hand — never under your engine, even for a couple of yards.
  • Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt answers that, and that is where our first question starts. Don't throw it away.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M61 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 3 miles from Top Lock, and stop somewhere sensible rather than pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

Every Top Lock fuel drain starts here: has the motor run?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • All the petrol sits inside that tank, and just there.
  • Usually it's emptied and purged just where the car stands.
  • This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of step one.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

  • Petrol has been pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the fuel lines.
  • The high-pressure pump and your injectors see it too on a longer run.
  • Mileage is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

Diesel keeps your high-pressure pump and your injectors protected as it goes through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just waiting in a tank. Pump that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Top Lock

A technician that circles versus a van that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

  • Your whereabouts: a postcode starting WN2 1 works best.
  • Name the road — Farm Lane or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.
  • What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, so mention the landmark — like the one at Top Nosh.
  • That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your vehicle.
  • Tell us which went in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Top Lock.
  • How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — either tells us how much.
  • If it's run, how far plus how heavily — and if it's run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's authorisation for this work, and sorting it before our technicians get there is faster than after.

Phone 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

Waiting for a fuel drain in Top Lock: what to do

In the wait, the harm comes from well-intended help — so these matter.

  • Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, stay with it.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.
  • None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.
  • No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves your fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.
  • Keep your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

Step by step: your fuel drain when our van arrives

  • First, three queries: which fuel got in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers decide this job, and so our price follows them.
  • Emptying it's how the blend gets taken from the tank.
  • Rinsing the fuel lines follows, since a car that ran has petrol past your tank, inside the fuel lines themselves.
  • Where your car has a usable filter, it is changed; otherwise, cleared.
  • Clean diesel goes in, then your system is primed.
  • Starting the car. When your system is bled with new diesel, our engineers start it and check it runs smoothly.

Only once it is running on clean diesel do our engineers head off. The vehicle returns to normal use straight away, and long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted early.

After the fuel drain: back on the road in Top Lock

  • Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it has been started on clean fuel.
  • Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over and call us back.
  • Your paperwork covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
  • The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
