Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Torquay? Don't Start It

Do not turn on your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not run, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Torquay and the remainder of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Call us before all else starts, so you'll learn what comes next.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Do not fire it up — and never believe it when it runs. Here is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just can't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It's eating into your fuel system as you drive.
  • Flicking your ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition off.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Lymington Road, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting TQ1 3, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired — those three details settle the whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real volume on the road in, and the way back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Passat outside Torre whilst the work happens, and we would much rather talk to you tonight than realise on Monday.

You will be told to move it clear of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags by Ellacombe Church of England Academy, a misfilled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond your filter towards your pump. Let them grumble. Call us.

This is what a job in the car park by The Jolly Judge typically looks like. We arrive at the vehicle, ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three replies settle most of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of your tank, your lines get cleaned, and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our technicians start the engine, confirm it runs smoothly, and you set off.

Seldom the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common spot our technicians work, and a narrow parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near Torquay Town Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park beside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Peugeot 3008 gets cleared, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — because by now the worst of that is in the lines, not the tank.

The smaller petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up by Upton Vale Baptist Church without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes E-Class you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody notices, and mileage settles how much petrol gets to the injectors.

Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

Forecourts are where this work mostly starts, and where a fair share of that finishes. Still at Harvest Energy? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

Before the engine has fired — a forecourt is the only setting the mistake ends up spotted. The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car is.

The staff will normally offer to roll the vehicle clear of the pump so the next customer can get by. That's worth doing. Cranking it to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Torquay and the areas beside it

Upton, Torre, Ellacombe, Plainmoor, St Marychurch — each of these on the rounds that take us across to Torquay too, a coastal town.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all towns across Devon have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Assuming is the thing to resist, particularly on a boundary or anywhere your satnav fails. Phone to ask.

This map shows the patch this page includes. The vehicle never needs to come to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside somewhere around Torquay?

Not everybody gets a chance to pull in anywhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge of St Marychurch Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Whether you wait beside your car or stand clear of it depends on if sitting there feels wise. Never fire up your motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system. However tricky the spot, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M5 matters, under 15 miles out of Torquay. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next safe exit, turn off, and do not restart the car to move it. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.

A little about Torquay

Torquay is a coastal town situated in Devon, England, forming part of the Torbay area. It is located near the county town of Exeter and the city of Plymouth, with the neighbouring town of Paignton to the west. Torquay is known for its seaside setting, with Tor Bay providing a picturesque backdrop to the town. The town's proximity to other coastal settlements, including the fishing port of Brixham, adds to its charm.

Our visit around Torquay, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.
  • The tank gets emptied completely.
  • We clean the lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the trouble.
  • We put clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. We do all of this wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Torquay AdBlue removal is a different problem

The problem is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Torquay page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Torquay

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Torquay motorists

At a petrol station around Torquay, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the vehicle off. Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. The pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Leave it switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.

Call-out fuel draining in Torquay and throughout Devon — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
