Town Park: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Town Park and the rest of Cheshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Our technicians can show you what your next part is. Phone — this happens before all else.
What to try now about petrol in a diesel
- Do not crank it. Started all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It is not okay — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
- Flicking the car's ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition off.
- Never water down it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- We'd much rather come to a difficult place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Greenhouse Farm Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
- Our van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts WA7 6, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you dial.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, approximately how much, plus if the engine has been run. Those replies shape all that follows.
The drive back would roughly double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Renault Megane. So keep it where it is. Phone us from the platform if that's quicker — no one needs you hovering over the vehicle outside Runcorn East while we get on, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.
Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Co-op Food now. Time elapsed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.
Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through, and petrol thins it. That is the entire process, and it accounts for the normal the green space at the edge of the village call: a diesel Dacia Duster that drove out there without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel thins, pressure that should build then stay built starts bleeding past clearances instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.
Why we are blunt about not driving on: your pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a worn-out pump sheds travels downstream with the fuel. Leave the Peugeot 3008 near Runcorn Ski Slope then call us.
A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle dead, idle uneven, and your diesel Vauxhall Astra is parked up close to Our Lady's RC Church. Your engine is not packing up — that softness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours generally get driven again before anybody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and phone us.
Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?
Pumps are where the job often begins, and where a good portion of that closes. The drain typically takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's agreement, that is a spot our technicians work, and regularly.
At a forecourt, this is caught with the engine never run, and no place else manages it. Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.
Wheel the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Moving the car four bays doesn't justify firing the motor.
Areas our vans cover in Town Park
Town Park is a residential suburb, so our technicians head out to it and to the areas near it on the usual rounds: Brookvale, Norton Cross, Palace Fields, Murdishaw and Halton Lea.
Not on that list? It says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations across Cheshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Phone to enquire rather than assuming, especially when you're on a boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.
Look at the map for the patch shown here. All of that is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.
Broken down by the kerbside around Town Park
Not everyone gets a suitable spot to pull in. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge on Wharfedale, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.
Okay right there? Sit beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward location, and that's no problem for us.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
Here is where the local M56 comes into it — under a mile from Town Park. A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are usually lost power, a rough idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.
Take the next exit that is sensible, stop there, and do not restart it to move it. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.
All about Town Park
Town Park is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated near the coast and approximately 12.7 miles from Chester. Town Park has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Town Park is one of several residential areas in the region, including nearby Brookvale and Norton Cross. Town Park sits at an elevation of around 59 metres above sea level, in a generally low-lying coastal area.
Once our engineers arrive with you around Town Park: what happens
- We find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
- The contaminated mixture is pulled from that tank.
- Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the trouble.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- We fire it up and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.
That has the car ready to set off. There is no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.
Town Park AdBlue removal is a separate matter
AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the fault under it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Town Park page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Town Park prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
One figure would not be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.
- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Town Park
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Town Park?
Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more frequently than drivers expect.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
There is no need to take it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.
Is your car still with you?
Leave the engine switched off.
Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
