Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Town Park? Don't Start It
Never turn on the engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, across Town Park and the remainder of Shropshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. A single call to us is sufficient: we will explain what follows after this. Make that first.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And having started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition remains off too — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those components.
- That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Northwood Terrace? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An awkward location works for us better than a started motor.
- The van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts TF3 1, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you ring.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus if the car has been turned over. Those responses determine whatever comes after.
Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, parked outside Telford Central since this morning? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the journey in that sucked diluted diesel through the pump. Call us before you drive the car.
Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from Randlay Primary School, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.
Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Grangepool Park call — a diesel Dacia Duster, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it bleeds past those clearances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the motor was built round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.
Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about your diesel Audi A6 near Randlay Community Centre. You'll not know how full the tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. Our engineers ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.
The fuel filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that is where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Citroen C3 that made it by Exotic Zoo Wildlife Park needs the circuit cleared rather than cleared.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?
A big share of this work is done at a forecourt, because that is where it usually kicks off. If you're still at the forecourt at Shell, that is normally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.
No place except a forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still unrun. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key.
Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Moving the car four bays doesn't merit firing the engine.
Town Park plus the villages next to it
Town Park is a residential suburb, and so our technicians head out to it and to the villages near it on the usual trips: Stirchley, Hinkshay, Randlay, Brookside and Aqueduct.
If yours is not on that list it does not mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all locations around Shropshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the thing to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Phone and check.
The patch the page covers sits on the map. The lot is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.
Town Park: broken down where you parked
A chance to pull in somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge on Stirchley Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.
Wait beside the vehicle when it's sensible to wait inside, yet clear of it if it's not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.
Run it already? Pull over, and read this
Here is where your M54 comes in, under 3 miles out of Town Park. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.
Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart it to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.
Town Park itself
Town Park is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 127 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Town Park is located near several other places, including Stirchley, Hinkshay, and Randlay, and is approximately 14 miles from Wolverhampton. Town Park has a population of around 3664 residents, and its proximity to Wolverhampton makes it a commuter-friendly location. Town Park is also relatively close to the West Midlands region's major cities, while still being 126 miles from London.
Once our technicians reach you in Town Park: what follows
- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
- That tank is drained of everything.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
- The system gets bled, on new diesel.
- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.
At that point it is ready to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very unusual.
Town Park AdBlue removal is a distinct matter
The issue isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.
Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Town Park page. Both are ours to deal with.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Town Park
One number wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.
Town Park drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Town Park petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work happens. Our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to put up with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.
Still with your car?
Don't turn your engine on again.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than drivers expect.
