Petrol in a Diesel Car in Townfoot

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Townfoot and the rest of Cumbria. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not run and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us before anything else starts, and you will see what comes next.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and don't depend on it if it does start. This is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It's wearing your fuel system while you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.
  • Never add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and our team would sooner come to an awkward place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on B6413, turn the hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Before you phone, gather your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts CA10 1 — that's what determines whether the van shows up or circles.
  • What got in, roughly how many litres, and also if the car has fired — the three answers settle the whole job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A good chunk of this work gets finished at the pump, since that's where it often starts. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

Before your engine has run — a garage is the only setting it ends up halted. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

The attendants will normally offer to wheel the vehicle clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Starting it just to move four car lengths is not.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we are actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call our engineers like sounds like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now turned off at Lakes & Dales Co-operative.

You set off at the end, once we have fired it up and confirmed it runs smoothly on new diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park by The Crown Inn, the contaminated fuel comes out of your tank, the lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when we reach the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked your diesel Mercedes E-Class up by Saint Nicholas a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us then leave the car off. The short distance really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has got to the filter and the pump — which is why our technicians flush the lines rather than only clearing that tank.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than sloppy — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up near Lazonby Bowling Club that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the fuel injectors.

By this point that tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, the lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Audi A6 that got near Lazonby Methodist Church needs the circuit cleared, not emptied.

Parts our vans serve in Townfoot

These same rounds take us to Lazonby, Kirkoswald, High Bankhill, North Dykes and Glassonby along with Townfoot, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around Cumbria, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us to check instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.

That map marks the area the page includes. We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and your car never needs to travel to us.

Roadside stops around Townfoot

Not everyone gets the chance to pull in anywhere safe. Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge of Fiddler's Lane, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit with the vehicle or step away from it depends on whether being nearby looks sensible. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to reach somewhere safer and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. A van driving to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then read this

under 5 miles out of Townfoot, your M6 is what counts here. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Long drive? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

A little about Townfoot

Townfoot is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Cumbria, with a relatively low elevation of around 80 metres. Townfoot lies near the city of Carlisle, approximately 13.5 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Lazonby and Kirkoswald. Townfoot has a population of around 574 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Townfoot is located in the North West region of England, about 248 miles from London.

Our visit in Townfoot, step by step

  • Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • That tank gets drained of it.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • We put new diesel in and prime your system.
  • Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Townfoot

The issue isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Townfoot has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Townfoot

What changes the price is laid out below, as this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Townfoot

At a petrol station in Townfoot, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big part of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more commonly than motorists assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Don't switch the car back on.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
