Petrol in Diesel

Townhead: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has stopped in Townhead or the rest of Glasgow City, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Phone and our engineers can explain what happens after that before you try much else.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you do not crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit most people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Switching your ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Never weaken it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We'd sooner get to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that has never moved. On the verge on St James Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • The van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts G4 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you call.
  • Three facts decide the full visit: the fuel you put in, the ballpark quantity involved, and if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where this work often kicks off, and where a large chunk of it finishes. If you're still at the forecourt at Shell, that is normally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

At the forecourt, the mistake is caught with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the help. Cranking it to move four car lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Townhead

Diesel Skoda Octavia. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, outside Aldi. That is the enquiry our technicians like, because the point underneath it is about volume through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

Every restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through the filter and into the pump. So a misfilled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags at the local primary school is an inconvenience, whereas the same car restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Somebody will tell you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Leave it there, let people moan, then ring us.

You drive off at the end, once we have fired it up and made sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park by The Howgait, the contaminated fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. It all begins with three questions when we reach the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Saint Nicholas Garden in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Our engineers clean the fuel lines rather than only clearing the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked up close to William Annan Fountain a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us and leave it off.

Areas our team cover in Townhead

Those same journeys carry us to Glasgow, Merchant City, Royston, Cowcaddens and St Enochs as well as Townhead, which is a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns around Glasgow City, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us and enquire rather than guessing — borders especially, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.

Use this map for the patch included on this page. All of it is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Townhead: stuck where you stopped

Some people get no suitable spot to pull over at all. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge on Weaver Street, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Okay right there? Remain with it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However difficult the spot, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

Your M8 is the one which counts now, and it lies under a mile from Townhead. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Get off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and don't restart it to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under a mile to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring alters.

Townhead itself

Townhead is a suburban area located on the riverside in Glasgow City, with a mix of old and new buildings, including predominantly flat-style housing. Townhead sits at an elevation of 41 metres, close to the city centre of Glasgow, and is nearby to other areas such as Merchant City and Royston. Townhead is home to a population of approximately 11971 residents, who live in close proximity to the amenities of Glasgow. Townhead's location makes it a convenient place to live for those working in the city.

When our engineers arrive with you in Townhead: what follows

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what started the problem, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. Our engineers do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Townhead is a distinct problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — while this issue under it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Townhead has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Townhead

We cannot put one number on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach your car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Townhead

At a petrol station in Townhead, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a good part of this work gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to live with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Do not turn the engine on again.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than people expect.

Call-out fuel draining in Townhead and across Glasgow City — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
