Petrol in Diesel

Townsend: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start your engine. While the petrol is still in that tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, all over Townsend and the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. We will show you what the following step is. Call us — that comes ahead of all else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That's why you do not start the car, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: turning it on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so do not add diesel on top to weaken it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Townsend, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode that starts TA19 0 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, roughly how much, and also whether your car has run. These three details settle your whole call-out.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning drive labouring on a liquid that had given up a great deal of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left standing outside Crewkerne till you realise at about eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the thing our technicians ask is about miles not hours. Call us. Leave the vehicle just where it sits.

If you have put petrol in your diesel Skoda Octavia around Townsend and you are now stranded at Tesco with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us. Don't crank it once more to leave the space. We will come out to you, drain the tank, rinse the fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls little diesel, which is why those tend to be the easy jobs.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Dillington Park in that diesel Audi A3 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of it.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than after that. Then ring us about the Peugeot 208, the diesel one, by Ilminster Library. Do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was — nearly no one can two days into a car, and it's something our technicians work out on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mix than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor packing up — and with no warning light for it, vehicles in that position typically get driven a second time before anybody phones. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Renault Captur now sitting near Ilminster Parish Hall. Turn the vehicle off then phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Townsend

Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

A big portion of this job ends up finished at a forecourt, as that's where it usually starts. The drain typically gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the station's consent, that's a spot we work, and often.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the one setting it gets stopped. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key.

The attendants will usually happily roll the vehicle clear of the pump so the next customer can get through. That is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Townsend and the places beside it

Townsend is a residential suburb, and so our vans head out to it and to the villages near it on the same trips: Knott Oak, Dillington, Ilminster, Kingstone and Moolham.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places around Somerset, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us to ask rather than guessing, especially if you're on a border or somewhere a satnav can't find.

Check our map for the ground included here. The lot is territory we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Townsend: stranded wherever you stopped

Some people have no safe spot to pull in whatsoever. If you noticed after setting off and finished up along the verge on Love Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Whether you remain beside the motor or move clear of it rests on whether sitting nearby seems safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We will take our van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled

This is where the local M5 comes in — under 10 miles from Townsend. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are generally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring alters.

All about Townsend

Townsend is a small suburban area in Somerset, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 61 metres. Townsend lies near the towns of Ilminster and Wells, and is close to the villages of Knott Oak and Dillington. Townsend has a population of around 677 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Townsend is located 126.5 miles west of London, in the South West region of England.

What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Townsend

  • Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • The tank is drained completely.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running smoothly.

From there, you're ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Townsend AdBlue removal is a separate matter

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — do not start it — but the problem is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Townsend has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Townsend

Truthfully, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Townsend drivers

I am on a forecourt in Townsend. Can you drain the car here?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our engineers answer straight away.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more frequently than drivers expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no. Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
