Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tre-Dodridge? Don't Start It

With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Tre-Dodridge and the remainder of The Vale of Glamorgan, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Phone before everything else happens, and you will learn what comes after that.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Never start the vehicle. Started anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car generally cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which carries this petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Pont Sarn Lane? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Before you dial, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts CF71 7 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the car has been run. Those answers settle everything that comes after.

On the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where this job usually starts, and where a large share of that finishes. If you're still at the forecourt at Murco, that is usually where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the only spot it is stopped. We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting it four spaces doesn't justify cranking it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tre-Dodridge

We are in car parks like the one at Tesco Express often, and it is almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Cars both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height bar at the entrance, which decides whether our van reaches you at all. So mention how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is pointing. If there's no space to work next to your Skoda Octavia, we roll it without your engine. That isn't pedantry over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank toward the pump, and a motor shifted twice for a roomier bay is quietly a worse job than one no one touched.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt completely usual on the way back from the local primary school. They always do, and that is the snag with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it generally will not run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure pump keeps working without the protection the fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing warns you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to alert you about. Ring us with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer counts more than the first.

It will start. It will pull away perfectly well. That's the issue, as a diesel on a weakened tank runs typically whilst grinding the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't risk the trip home from The Red Lion at Pendoylan — leave the Ford Focus then ring us.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Peugeot 208, a fill-up by Hensol Castle that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the injectors.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor giving up — and with no dashboard light for it, cars in that position usually get driven again before anyone rings. Don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Kia Sportage now resting close to St. Donat's Church. Switch the car off and phone us.

Areas our team cover in Tre-Dodridge

As a rural hamlet, Tre-Dodridge has a steady call, while its neighbours nearby go with it on the same trip: Clawdd-coch and Pendoylan, Welsh St Donats and Gwern-y-Steeple, Peterston-super-Ely.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for most places in The Vale of Glamorgan, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours. Near the border, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Call us and check instead of assuming.

The ground the page spans sits on this map. The vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Tre-Dodridge: broken down where you pulled up

Some people find no safe place to pull over whatsoever. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Heol St Cattwg because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the catch: restart the car to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. However inconvenient the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the M4 comes into it — under 3 miles from Tre-Dodridge. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and don't restart it to move it. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

A little about Tre-Dodridge

Tre-Dodridge is a small hamlet in the Vale of Glamorgan, situated inland at an elevation of 57 metres, and is located approximately 8 miles from Cardiff. Tre-Dodridge is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Tre-Dodridge sits near other small communities such as Clawdd-coch, Pendoylan, and Welsh St Donats, and is part of the wider commuter belt around Cardiff.

Once our engineers arrive with you around Tre-Dodridge: what follows

  • The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
  • We drain that tank of the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our engineers start it and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

After that it is ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Tre-Dodridge?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the problem beneath it's a separate one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Tre-Dodridge page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Tre-Dodridge pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Tre-Dodridge

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Tre-Dodridge?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. It's recoverable much more often than people assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
