Petrol in Diesel

Tre-Gibbon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Tre-Gibbon or the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before anything else starts, so you will hear what comes after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't start the vehicle — and do not believe it when it starts. Here is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It's grinding the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A car that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Plas Newydd Isa? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Have your location prepared before you call. A postcode beginning CF44 0 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and our van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how much, and also if the car has run. Those three answers shape the entire call-out.

How far you drove is what we query, not how long the car has been parked — and this is why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it protects its injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried fill on the trip in, the penny dropping around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside Aberdare since quarter past eight shows those few miles were travelled with the pump working on a fuel drained of a great deal of its protection. Ring us then leave the car right where it sits.

Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Tesco, somewhere in Tre-Gibbon? Then ring us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to exit the spot. Someone comes to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile uses little, so these are often the straightforward cases.

Leave the Mercedes C-Class near Llwyncoed Community Centre then call us. We are firm about not driving on since a wearing pump sheds, and what it gives off moves onward with your fuel to the injectors downstream.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a lumpy idle, rattling: that's a misfilled diesel Dacia Duster telling you what is wrong. Do not start it to find a better location — turn off where you have stopped, by Saint James' Church or anywhere else.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel BMW 5 Series that made it near St Fagan's Church needs its circuit cleared. Emptying is not the same thing.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this job mostly kicks off, and where a large share of that closes. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at Tesco that is typically where this drain takes place.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the only place it gets halted. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Worth it. Firing it just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Service in Tre-Gibbon

Tre-Gibbon is a small village, and so our technicians head out to the town and to the areas around it on the same journeys: Tre-Ifor, Llwydcoed, Penywaun, Trecynon and Robertstown.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns across Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us to enquire instead of assuming — borders particularly, and wherever the satnav might struggle with.

Use this map for the ground shown on this page. Your car does not need to travel to us. Our technicians work over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down by the kerbside near Tre-Gibbon

Not everybody gets a sensible spot to pull in. If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge on Tre Ifor, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Okay there? Stay beside it. Not fine? Get out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However difficult the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The M4 is the road which counts here, and sits under 15 miles from Tre-Gibbon. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our technicians bring alters.

A little about Tre-Gibbon

Tre-Gibbon is a small locality in Rhondda Cynon Taf, situated near the riverside at an elevation of 228 metres. Tre-Gibbon lies within a short distance of several nearby communities, including Tre-Ifor, Llwydcoed, and Penywaun. Tre-Gibbon is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is located approximately 21 miles north of Cardiff. Tre-Gibbon is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of around 144 miles.

Once our engineers arrive with you around Tre-Gibbon: what happens

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The contaminated fuel is drawn from the tank.
  • Our engineers purge the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what created the issue.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tre-Gibbon

The fault isn't the same, though the opening rule is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Tre-Gibbon page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Tre-Gibbon?

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Tre-Gibbon motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Tre-Gibbon. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place. Our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate fault and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, as our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
