Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Trebanos? Don't Start It
If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Trebanos or the rest of Neath Port Talbot, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Our engineers will tell you what your next stage will be. Ring us — this goes ahead of all else.
Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step
- Do not start the car — and don't depend on it when it fires up. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just can't run, so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It is not all right. It is grinding your fuel system while you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those components.
- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we'd rather come to an awkward location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Pheasant Road, switch the hazards on then keep the car there.
- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning SA8 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.
- Three details determine the full call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate measure of it, and whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Quarter past eight. A rushed top-up on the drive in. Somewhere around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has sat at Skewen for three hours. Phone us then leave the car where it stands. What is key is the run in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — protects the pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever burns. Those few miles worked your pump on a liquid stripped of much of its protection, and no volume of sitting in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the instruction to leave your keys be till we get there.
The components that should be getting oiled are wearing down instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Risk the drive home from the pub in the village? Don't. Phone us and leave the Nissan Qashqai where it stands.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the precision components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Audi A4 drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how the drive to Trebanos Park went, then, and the tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, switch off then phone us.
Rarely the issue, the location. On-street is the commonest spot we work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from near Pontardawe Leisure Centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Mercedes C-Class gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire system — because by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not the tank.
Strange locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the smaller petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up by Pontardawe Arts Centre without thinking, in a diesel Dacia Duster you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone notices, and miles is what determines how much petrol ends up at your injectors.
Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt
Pumps are where the job usually kicks off, and where a large share of that closes. We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is generally where the drain gets done.
At the forecourt, this gets stopped with the motor never run, and no place else does that. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for your key are what determine that.
Wheel the vehicle out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.
Do we cover your end of Trebanos?
Craig-y-Duke, Penydre, Alltwen, Pontardawe, Gellygron — all of those on our trips that take us out to Trebanos as well, a village.
There are pages for most locations in Neath Port Talbot, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list says nothing at all about if we come. Ring us to ask instead of assuming — county lines especially, and wherever a satnav might get wrong.
Check this map for the area covered on this page. Every bit of that is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.
Roadside stops in Trebanos
Not everyone gets the chance to pull in somewhere suitable. Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge beside Morgan Street, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.
Clear of the motor while it's not wise to be inside, by it when it is. Don't restart your engine to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mix further into the fuel system. A technician heading to a difficult location is no problem for us, and it is far better for the car than driving on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles
under 3 miles from Trebanos, the M4 is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.
Take the first exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart it to move it. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.
Where is Trebanos?
Trebanos is a small village situated on the riverside in Neath Port Talbot, with a population of around 905 people. Trebanos has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and the village is located near other small communities like Craig-y-Duke and Penydre. Trebanos sits at an elevation of 35 metres, close to the city of Swansea, which is about 7 miles away. Trebanos is part of the wider Swansea urban area, but retains its own distinct character.
Our visit in Trebanos, step by step
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.
- Out goes the tainted fuel.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
- The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
- It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running correctly.
From that point, you are ready to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, it is very unusual for there to be permanent damage.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Trebanos
If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the issue isn't. The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Trebanos page. Both are ours to deal with.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Trebanos?
Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:
- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.
Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.
Things we get about petrol in diesel around Trebanos
I'm on a forecourt in Trebanos. Can you drain it on the spot?
A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer straight away.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.
Waiting next to it?
That engine stays off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
Call-out fuel draining around Trebanos and throughout Neath Port Talbot — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
