Petrol in Diesel

Trecynon: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't start the engine. While the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, all over Trecynon and the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Ring us and our technicians can tell you what comes next before you attempt any more.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for several miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never start the vehicle. And if started, do not believe it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: turning it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
  • Never pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Harriet Street, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CF44 8, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.
  • What got in, about how much, plus whether the car has started — the three facts determine the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight. A quick fill on the way in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Aberdare for three hours. Phone us then keep the vehicle where it stands. What counts is the journey in, since diesel both combusts and — before that — protects your pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a liquid drained of a lot of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the question about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave your keys alone until our technicians get there.

Move the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags by the local primary school, a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia is a nuisance and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for good manners, it's no longer a tank issue but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through your filter toward the pump. Let everyone moan. Phone us.

It will start. It will move off just fine. That's the problem, as a diesel on a thinned tank behaves generally whilst grinding the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, don't try the trip home from Cross Inn — leave the Peugeot 308 then ring us.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it passes through — that's the entire process. It accounts for the normal Aberdare Park call too: a diesel Nissan Qashqai that travelled out without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Drain it then put clean diesel in — that is the advice you will get, usually from someone confident, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel BMW 5 Series close to St Fagan's Church and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What happens next is the issue: your engine immediately sucks the petrol still resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. We flush the system and take the filter off where the car has a serviceable one, which is the difference between your car being fixed and your car just starting.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Trecynon

Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

A good part of the job ends up done at a pump, as that's where it mostly begins. We work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, and so if you're still at Tesco that is normally where the drain takes place.

A filling station is the only place the mistake gets caught before your motor has run. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That is still not a disaster, and we sort it out where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Moving the car four bays doesn't warrant firing it.

Parts our vans cover in Trecynon

Being a residential suburb, Trecynon gets a routine call, and the places nearby come with it on the same trip: Robertstown and Gadlys, Llwydcoed and Aberdare, Penywaun.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations in Rhondda Cynon Taf have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Assuming is the thing to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere your satnav gets lost. Phone and enquire.

That map marks the area the page includes. Your car does not need to come to us. We operate across every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the kerbside in Trecynon

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over anywhere safe. Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Ebenezer Street, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Sit beside the motor if it is safe to wait in it, and clear of it if it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. Pressing on causes your car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult place, and that is no problem for us.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the M4 comes into it — under 15 miles from Trecynon. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the first junction that's safe, pull up there, and never start it to move it. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

What comes next when our technicians arrive with you in Trecynon

  • The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • The tank is drained completely.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • We start it and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away. We do all of this wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Trecynon?

Don't start it: that opening instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Trecynon page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Trecynon

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank holds.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Trecynon drivers

Fuel drains on a Trecynon petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. It is fixable far more often than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Your pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep the car switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
