Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Treninnick?

Do not start your engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Treninnick and the rest of Cornwall, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Contact us before everything else starts, and you'll see what comes next.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And if started, do not rely on it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.
  • Never thin it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Treninnick Hill, anywhere — an awkward location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Our van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning TR7 2, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • What went in, about how many litres, and also if the car has started — those three details determine the whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Driving it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has forced real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return journey would close to double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Passat can wait at Newquay perfectly happily. Ring from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our technicians work is not necessary.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst your car stands, because a diesel Ford Focus left at Pitch and Putt is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked the diesel Audi A3 up close to Atlantic Centre a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us and leave it off. The short hop really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has arrived at your filter and your pump — which is why our engineers purge the lines rather than only emptying that tank.

The narrower petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not slapdash. Unfamiliar places see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up close to Waterworld without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Insignia you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and mileage settles how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

Drain it then put clean diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, normally from a person certain, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Peugeot 2008 close to Newquay Zoo and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound plausible. What happens next is the trouble: your engine immediately sucks the petrol still resting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. We flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between the car being put right and the car simply starting.

Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

The work kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Frequently the job wraps up there as well. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's consent, that is a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the only location the mistake is caught before the engine has run. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car stands.

Staff will normally chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the offer. Starting the car to shift four car lengths is not.

Coverage around Treninnick

Treninnick is a residential suburb, and we get out to the town and to the places by it on those same trips: Trenance, Trencreek, Trevemper, Lane and Newquay.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of places around Cornwall have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Near a boundary, or somewhere a satnav gets wrong? Contact us to ask rather than assuming.

That map is the patch the page spans. Your vehicle does not need to come to us. We operate over all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Treninnick: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone has a safe place to pull over. Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge beside Treloggan Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Okay there? Wait beside it. Not safe? Climb out and away from it. Never start up the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into the system. We will take the van to a difficult spot without any fuss, and for the car that is much better than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local M5 comes into it — over 50 miles away from Treninnick. A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are typically a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible junction then turn off. It alters what our engineers bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

All about Treninnick

Treninnick is a suburban area in Cornwall, situated near the north coast of the South West region, with Treninnick being close to several nearby places including Trenance, Trencreek, and Trevemper. Treninnick has a population of around 3808 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Treninnick is located approximately 9.9 miles from Truro, the nearest city, and sits at an elevation of around 40 metres above sea level.

The job in Treninnick, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The polluted mixture is drawn out of that tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • We put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • Once it's fired up, our technicians check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

Treninnick AdBlue removal is a different job

Don't start it: that first step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Treninnick page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Treninnick

One number wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Whether a van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Treninnick

At a petrol station around Treninnick, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done. Our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the car off. It is fixable much more often than people fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no. The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Never turn the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.
