Petrol in a Diesel Car in Trevarth Estate: What Happens Now
Pause, then keep the motor off — not on, and not for a second to shift the vehicle. Drained and flushed, just where it sits: that is generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that straightforward depends on the minutes to come far more than on everything else. Here's the sequence of things from now, anywhere you're around Trevarth Estate.
Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute
Go through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.
- Pull your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the parts it damages, so leave the vehicle alone entirely.
- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You end up with a bigger tank of the same mix.
- Get the car easy to see before anything else — hazards on — if there's traffic going past anywhere near you.
- The attendants will generally help you roll it clear of the petrol pump. Let them, then roll it by hand — never under your engine, even for a couple of yards.
- The first thing we will ask is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and your receipt says both. Hold on to it.
If you were still on the move when you noticed, stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M5, over 50 miles from Trevarth Estate, that means the next junction. Step one follows.
The fork in each Trevarth Estate fuel drain: has it run yet?
Everything after this stage rests on one answer.
If your motor has not run at all:
- No place but that tank: that's where that petrol yet is.
- Where the vehicle sits is normally where this work happens: a drain, then a flush.
- No place is better, and it is why the first stage matters so much.
If the engine has run, even for a moment:
- Out of the tank, past your filter, into the fuel lines: that is how far that petrol has got.
- Run it further and the petrol gets to your injectors, having passed through the fuel pump first.
- The job expands with the miles — lines purged, filter sorted, sometimes more.
Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line falls where it does. Petrol sitting in a tank damages nothing. Petrol being pumped is wearing the parts that shift the vehicle.
Trevarth Estate, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call
Prepare a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.
- PL26 6 and the remainder of the postcode is the ideal way to start telling us where you are.
- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Tregoney Hill, or wherever you have stopped.
- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so mention the landmark — such as the one at Asda.
- That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of your vehicle.
- What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Trevarth Estate, and so say which.
- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.
- If it's run, how far plus how hard — as well as whether it has run at all.
- Settle who owns the vehicle before our technicians arrive: some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that is quicker first.
Call 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to works too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.
Trevarth Estate fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait
The wait is where kindly meant help does the damage. Hold to these.
- Stay with your car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- A helpful passer-by does not start it. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or rolling it a few yards.
- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of that gets that petrol back out.
- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains put anyway.
- Ignition remains off. Even for the radio or the windows.
Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time
- Fuel, volume, whether it's run: those answers set the job, and that's why you get a quote after them instead of before.
- Draining it's how that mixture gets taken from that tank.
- The lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond your tank, and the lines are holding it.
- Cleared, or replaced if the car has a workable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.
- The system is primed with fresh diesel.
- First start on new diesel. Once bleeding is finished, the motor is started and our engineers check that it runs properly.
Till it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it. Permanent damage is very rare if it has been spotted soon, so the vehicle can go straight back to normal use.
Trevarth Estate, after your fuel drain: back on the road
- Nothing special is needed after a start with clean diesel — normal driving will do.
- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle tells you to pull over and call us back.
- Your documents covers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. File it.
- The handle's colour is not the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
