Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Trillick

Do not fire up the engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets settled in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Trillick and the rest of County Tyrone, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Phone so our technicians will explain what happens after that before you attempt any more.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it — and do not believe it when it fires up. That is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel generally just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing out your fuel system while you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition be.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Rock Street, anywhere — an odd spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.
  • Get your position prepared before you call. A postcode starting BT78 3 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.
  • Three facts determine the entire call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and if anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

Most of the job starts at a pump, meaning a large part of that is done at one. Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's generally where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the motor still cold. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines along with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where your car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Well worth it. Starting it just to roll four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Trillick

Trillick plus the towns near it

Kilskeery, Dromore, Ballinamallard, Tempo, Irvinestown — each of those on our journeys that carry us out to Trillick too, a small village.

Our engineers do come. The places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations across County Tyrone, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us and enquire instead of presuming, especially where you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

The ground the page covers sits on this map. Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We operate across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol through the filter and into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class on the zig-zags by the local primary school is a hassle, whereas the same car fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. Leave it, let them moan, then give us a call.

You set off at the end, once our technicians have started it and confirmed it runs smoothly on fresh diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park at the pub in the village, the polluted fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get cleaned and the fuel filter comes off where your BMW 5 Series has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when we reach your car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Citroen C3 did on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, it's doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

Three things help when you ring from near the centre: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual spot our engineers work, so the place itself is hardly ever the trouble — we would far rather deal with a tight parking bay than with a car that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the Audi Q5, change the filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, as by this point the worst of that is resting in your lines rather than in the tank.

That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine giving up — and with no warning for it, cars in that position normally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Skoda Superb now waiting by the far end of the built-up part. Turn the vehicle off then ring us.

Trillick: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone gets a safe place to stop. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Crom Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Safe there? Stay by it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Pressing on does the car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no bother for us.

Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled

Your M77 is the one that counts here, and sits over 50 miles from Trillick. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Never start it to move it. Pull off at the next safe exit then turn off. It alters what our engineers bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Our visit in Trillick, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Our technicians drain the tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The motor is fired up and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Trillick AdBlue removal is a separate job

Do not start it: that first step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Our engineers cover both, and AdBlue removal in Trillick has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Trillick

One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Trillick

Fuel drains on a Trillick petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Is the car still with you?

Switched off is the way it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
