Trinity: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens
Whatever you do, don't switch the engine on, even briefly, to move the car. Stop; leave it off. Emptied then flushed, right where it is: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that straightforward depends on the minutes to come more than on anything else. What follows is the order from here, wherever in Trinity you happen to be.
Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one
Go through these in order, before you do anything else.
- Bleeding the system pulls petrol from your tank toward the components it damages, and turning the ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys come out, and the ignition stays off completely.
- Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the trouble. It does not: nothing gets out, and your tank just carries more of the same.
- Near moving traffic? Then your hazards come on before everything else, and so the vehicle is easy to see.
- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the petrol pump. Do not crank it to move it, however short the distance.
- Hold on to your receipt. It shows which fuel got in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.
Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you're on the M8, under 10 miles from Trinity, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services farther on. Step one starts after that.
Every Trinity fuel drain starts here: has the engine run?
Everything after this stage depends on one answer.
Engine never run at all?
- Only your tank has petrol in it for now.
- Where your car sits is normally where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.
- No spot is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.
If it's been started, even for a second:
- From the tank, through the filter, into the lines: that is how far that petrol has travelled.
- On a longer run it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.
- The job expands with the mileage — lines rinsed, filter sorted, occasionally more.
The line falls there because diesel protects your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing. The components that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.
What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Trinity
Whether the van circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.
- Where you are. A postcode beginning EH6 4 is the best start.
- A road name helps: Craighall Road, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
- Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: say the one outside Asda, and it's straightforward.
- That it is a diesel, along with the make and model of your car.
- What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Trinity, and so say which.
- The amount: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.
- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and the way it was driven.
- The owner may have to approve this work under some hire or company agreements — which is why it is quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before our engineers arrive.
Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.
Waiting for a fuel drain in Trinity: what to do
Hold to these: kindly meant help does the damage during the wait.
- Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before your car.
- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's kindness: no one starts it.
- Additives remain in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out again.
- Emptying it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond the tank stays where it is all the same.
- Even the radio or the windows aren't worth switching your ignition on for.
Step by step: your fuel drain when the van gets there
- Three queries. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers shape this job, which is why the quote comes after them but not before.
- Next that tank is emptied, and the contaminated fuel comes out.
- The lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond that tank, and the lines are carrying it.
- Cleared, or changed if the vehicle has a usable one: the filter is dealt with next.
- Priming comes after fresh diesel is in.
- Starting up. After the system is primed with new diesel, our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly.
The car has clean diesel running through it before our technicians head off. The vehicle returns to normal use at once, and long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon.
Trinity, after the fuel drain: back on the road
- Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving is all.
- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.
- Keep the paperwork. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was carried out.
- Next time, go by the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
