Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Trispen? Don't Start It

Never turn on your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Trispen and the rest of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Phone so our engineers shall explain what happens next before you do anything else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Turned on anyway? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a few miles. Most people get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Turning the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We'd sooner drive to an awkward location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort out than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Trispen Hill, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting TR4 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how much, and if the engine has started. These three replies decide the entire job.

How many miles you drove is what we care about, not how long your vehicle has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel performs two roles on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it protects the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a fast fill on the drive in, the realisation coming around eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane parked outside Truro since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were covered with your pump running on a fuel robbed of most of its protection. Phone us then leave it just where it sits.

Nothing tells you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from St Erme with Trispen Community Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off then phone us. Fine on the way out to Jewell's Covert, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Audi A4 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later. Then call us about the Ford Kuga close to St. Erme Village Hall, and do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

By now that tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mix goes into your filter, into the lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that made it near St Hermes wants its circuit purged. Emptying isn't the same thing.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Trispen

On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Pumps are where this work mostly starts, and where a big part of it closes. The drain generally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's permission, that is a spot our engineers work, and often.

Before your motor has run — a forecourt is the single place this is spotted. Our engineers can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Push it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it for four car lengths? Never.

Areas we serve around Trispen

As a village, Trispen sees a steady visit, while its neighbours close by come along on the same round: St Erme and Truthan, St Allen and Zelah, Carland Cross.

Our engineers do come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most places across Cornwall, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. On the boundary, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Call us and enquire instead of assuming.

The map shows the patch the page covers. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of that asks the vehicle to move to us.

Broken down at the kerbside around Trispen

Not everybody has a chance to pull over anywhere sensible. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge of Truthan View, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Sit with the motor while it's sensible to sit there, but out of the car if it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. We will send our van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for your car that's a lot better than pressing on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Here is where your M5 comes in — over 50 miles away from Trispen. A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to move it. Come off at the first sensible exit and switch off. Long trip? Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

A little about Trispen

Trispen is a village in Cornwall, situated near the city of Truro and the villages of St Erme, Truthan, and St Allen. Trispen sits in a riverside setting, with an elevation of around 103 metres, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing. Trispen is located approximately 229 miles west of London, in the South West region of England. Trispen has a population of around 1289 residents, making it a small but distinct community.

The visit in Trispen, step by step

  • We check what got in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.
  • We clear the tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • We rinse the lines and clear the filter, and so what is left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed quickly, and since everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Trispen AdBlue removal is a separate job

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the fault is not. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Trispen page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Trispen?

One price would not be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Trispen

Fuel drains on a Trispen petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement we work at Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. It's recoverable a lot more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and your car, still together?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more regularly than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
