Trub: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Trub and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Contact us before everything else happens, and you will hear what happens from there.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the car. And having started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone also: switching it on is often all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay put if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Earl Street, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode starting OL11 2 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, about how many litres, plus if your car has been started. Those responses shape all that comes after.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Renault Megane left outside Castleton this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through your pump was the run in. Phone us before you head off to fetch the car.

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. Some litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Co-op Food. That is the call our engineers want, because the point beneath it's about volume through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

Here's what a job in the car park at The Old Post Office Ale House normally looks like. Our engineers get to the car, ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three answers determine most of the work. Then the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our engineers start the engine, make sure it runs correctly, and you set off.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is before your injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it gives off onward with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Dacia Duster close to St Martin.

By this point that tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the fuel filter, your lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel BMW 1 Series that got by Castleton Sports Centre needs the circuit flushed, not drained.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A good portion of the work gets completed at the pump, since that's where it often begins. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at BP that is normally where this drain takes place.

A filling station is the single setting it can be halted before the engine has run. Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Well worth it. Starting the car for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Service around Trub

As a village, Trub sees a regular call, whilst the areas round about come with it on that same trip: Castleton and Thornham Fold, Slattocks and Stake Hill, Kirkholt.

Our technicians still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most locations around Greater Manchester, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. On a border, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Call us and enquire rather than presuming.

Use our map for the area included here. All of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't drive the car anywhere.

Stuck at the roadside near Trub

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over anywhere suitable. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge of Westbrook Close, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Whether you remain by the motor or step away from it rests on whether staying in it seems sensible. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no trouble for us.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under a mile from Trub, the M62 is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

All about Trub

Trub is a village in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 143 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Trub lies approximately 7.7 miles from Manchester and 167.2 miles from London, placing it in a commuter belt with access to major cities. Trub is surrounded by nearby places such as Castleton, Thornham Fold, and Slattocks, which share similar geographical characteristics. Trub has a population of around 1620 residents, making it a small but established community.

What comes next when we arrive with you in Trub

  • Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The tainted mixture is pulled from that tank.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's left in your system is not what caused the problem.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Trub is a separate matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the issue under it's a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Trub page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Trub

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what moves it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. If it's not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Trub drivers

Fuel drains on a Trub petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement we visit Tesco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
