Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tuebrook?

Never start your engine. While the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, across Tuebrook and the rest of Merseyside, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Call us before all else happens, so you'll know what follows after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you never fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Leave the car's ignition be too. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually enough to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We would sooner come to a tricky location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on West Derby Road, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
  • Before you ring, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning L13 7 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, about how many litres, and if the motor has been started. The replies settle whatever follows.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the drive back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is okay. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf outside Wavertree Technology Park whilst the work happens, and our team would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and mostly it won't run, and so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be giving. That's the catch, and it's why your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely ordinary coming back from Lister Infant and Nursery School. They do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing alerts you. Phone us with roughly how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

You set off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and checked it runs correctly on clean diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park outside The Flat House, the polluted fuel comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. It all starts with three questions when we get to the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full your tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and our technicians work that out there. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Volvo XC60 close to St Cecilia's Catholic Church.

By this point that tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Skoda Superb that got near Tuebrook Market needs the circuit flushed, not emptied.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?

Most of this work begins at a pump, which means a big chunk of that gets completed there. Still at EG On the Move? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with the motor never started, and no place else does it. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Moving the car four spaces doesn't warrant firing the engine.

Tuebrook plus the places near it

Tuebrook is a residential suburb, and our vans get out to it and to the villages by it on those same trips: Clubmoor, Stoneycroft, Stanley, Tillerman Court and Sandfield Park.

There are separate pages for most towns around Merseyside, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list means nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come. Guessing is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the boundary or anywhere a satnav goes wrong. Contact us and ask.

The area the page includes appears on the map. Your car never needs to travel to us. We operate throughout every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded by the kerb somewhere around Tuebrook?

Some people get no sensible spot to stop at all. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Lisburn Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you sit beside the vehicle or step away from it hangs on if being nearby is safe. Never start it up to reach a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into your fuel system. A van coming to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the car than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled

This is where the M62 counts, under 3 miles from Tuebrook. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the next safe junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

About Tuebrook

Tuebrook is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated approximately 2.4 miles from Liverpool city centre, with Tuebrook being part of the larger Liverpool urban area. Tuebrook sits at an elevation of around 40 metres, with Tuebrook's proximity to the coast influencing its climate and geography. Tuebrook is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock, with Tuebrook being a relatively densely populated area, home to around 9997 people.

When our engineers arrive with you in Tuebrook: what follows

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • The contaminated fuel comes from that tank.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what created the trouble, so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running properly.

At that point it is ready to set off. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tuebrook

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Tuebrook has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Tuebrook costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One figure would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Tuebrook motorists

Fuel drains on a Tuebrook petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It's fixable a lot more regularly than people assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your car still with you?

Leave the car switched off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people expect, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
