Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tweedmouth? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Tweedmouth and the remainder of Northumberland. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. When the motor has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in. Contact us before everything else happens, and you'll hear what comes from there.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That is why you never fire it up, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point people get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Turning the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.
  • That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we would sooner come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Turret Gardens, switch those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Have your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts TD15 2 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, roughly how many litres, plus if the engine has been started. Your answers shape everything that happens next.

Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Often enough the job finishes on site as well. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at Asda that's typically where this drain takes place.

No place other than a forecourt can it be spotted with the engine still cold. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where the car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Well worth it. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Coverage in Tweedmouth

These same rounds take us to Prior Park, Spittal, Berwick-upon-Tweed, East Ord and Scremerston along with Tweedmouth, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for most locations in Northumberland, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing about whether our technicians come. Call us to check instead of assuming, above all if you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone can't find.

That map shows the ground the page covers. Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine. By Tweedmouth West Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, then phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Nissan Qashqai or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry demands a great deal of that.

Three replies decide most of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to your car in the car park at The Angel Inn. Next the tainted mixture comes out of that tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Ford Focus has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When clean diesel is in and the system bled, our engineers start the car and make sure it runs properly before you set off.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Peugeot 3008 drove, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how that trip to Old Shielfield Park went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes E-Class parked by Shielfield Park scarcely two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short distance does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines instead of only clearing your tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — close to St Bartholomews or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 1 Series telling you what is wrong.

Tweedmouth: stuck where you stopped

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge beside Etal Road, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you stay with the motor or move away from it turns on if being in it seems wise. Don't restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system. A van driving to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Run it already? Pull over, and check below

The local M8 is the one which counts here, and it sits over 50 miles from Tweedmouth. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and don't start it to move it. On a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what we bring.

A bit about Tweedmouth

Tweedmouth is a coastal suburban area in Northumberland, situated near the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and close to the Scottish border. Tweedmouth lies at an elevation of around 25 metres, with views out to sea and a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Tweedmouth is part of the wider Berwick-upon-Tweed urban area, which includes nearby places like Prior Park, Spittal, and the town centre itself.

The visit around Tweedmouth, step by step

  • The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Our engineers empty that tank of all the tainted mixture.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • We put clean diesel in and bleed your system.
  • When it's started, our technicians confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away. There is no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Tweedmouth is a different matter

The issue isn't the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Tweedmouth page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Tweedmouth?

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank can hold.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it's not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Tweedmouth

Fuel drains on a Tweedmouth petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists expect.
